tried solo top roping for the first time yesterday. first one felt kind of spooky, but after i shook that out it was really fun. it was an interesting experience to be totally alone in an activity that usually has at least 1 other person. i still like climbing with other people, but it's nice to have this in the toolbox now for when i can't wrangle a partner.

yeah, that was me. here's another pic to try to make it clearer than i could describe. blue scribble is supposed to be a harness, yellow is a 120 cm sling twisted into a basic chest harness and clipped to the rescucender to keep it up. rollnlock just trails. a few loops of rope twisted up and hanging a foot off the ground is enough weight to keep everything feeding freely. so you just climb and the ropegrabs tend themselves. static rope is best. some people drop 2 lengths (often 1 rope double over) with one device on each strand, but i just ran them off 1 to minimize spaghetti and extended the anchor to keep the rope from rubbing. but i never fell ( was doing easy stuff to dip my feet in), so abrasion wasn't really much of a concern anyways..

that looks overly complicated for my young mind. I'm just getting used to building my own anchors at this point and feeling comfortable when off belay. I'd like to start dicking around more with anchor systems and belay systems and whatnot -- it is fascinating stuff.

terrible option, because you have to manually pull the rope through it as you climb. i don't have to touch the rope and can just focus on the climbing.

Actually, having done a significant amount of climbing in both settings, I'd say that trees offer a greater diversity in styles/feels of climbing and in potential challenge. Being that you're moving through a three dimensional canopy rather than up a 2D slab, and the structural differences between different species or even individuals of the same species, each climb offers unique character and a ton of possibilities for creative movement and challenge. Especially if you are using ropes to redirect your weight (as an arborist would on a work climb), allowing the climber to move out laterally and reach areas where free climbing would be impossible. Like you can pick literally any spot in the canopy and challenge yourself to get there. After years of tree climbing, rocks feel so linear in comparison. Don't condemn something just because it's not what you're accustomed to, anon.

i've been climbing trees my whole life, and i disagree. there are minor differences from species to species, but nothing like the differences between face and crack and slab and offwidth and chimney. and climbing a tree you're always IN a tree. one of my favorite parts of rock climbing is clearing the tree canopy and seeing a whole new view.

that being said, i'm glad you've found something you love, and i'm not trying to devalue it for you. just offering my different view.

Anyone by any chance in Michigan or know any place to find belay buddies?? I've always been a bit shy and stuff so I've never really had anyone to belay with and as such I've been stuck with only bouldering

Hey,
I wanna do some solo work climbing trees and building some tree stands and stuff. I wanna just tie a rope to a tall branch and use a blake's hitch and a rope harness to climb up and down the tree. Anyone have any idea how well tha will work before I get out there and find out the hard way?

You got the right idea. Ascending is a lot easier if you use a texas kick system with a foot loop. Your challenge is gonna be to set your rope in the first place, you’ll either need to use a throw line, which is dangerous if you don’t know what makes a throw safe vs unsafe to climb on, or you’ll have to free climb or set protection as you go using a ground anchor. Or you could climb like an arborist and use a short tether to secure yourself each time you progress the anchor for your climb line. If this is confusing look up arborist progress climbing on youtube. I hardly ever climb with ropes unless I’m working

Tree surgeon here. I work on a prusik 95% of the time. I prefer it over a blakes hitch.
The simplest way to climb IMO it to have two prusiks and use either end of your line. You throw the end of the line over a limb, hook into it, then ascend by thrusting your hips up and taking in the slack by advancing the prusik. Once you reach the limb your rope is over you throw the other end over a higher limb, hook into it, transfer your weight onto that rope then un hook the first. That description is a little messy but you want to research basic DDRT climbing.

these videos give you a rough idea. In the second video he uses a lanyard but you can use the other end of your main line.

So I'm bouldering comfortably on V4s now and am making progress on V5s but feel like my progression has slowed down a lot. Should I start to think about getting a hangboard/finger board and training now to help me advance or is that not really needed yet?
Also my old evolv defys are starting to get fairly beat to shit. Any recommendations on a good next shoe?

I'll take this to the field when I get a decent weekend and start seeing how I do

One issue is that a lot of trees in this area I wanna go in don't seem to have many branches, so I may have to scale big trunks with no big branches to latch onto. What technique would you use for one of these?

You'd either use a slingshot to set a throw line high up then ascend, or spurs and a flip line to climb straight up the trunk. I wouldn't consider either to be a beginner technique, and the gear is flipping expensive too. I would start on easier trees

I hit that same V5 wall and bought a hangboard.
I'm now at ~V7 after a year of slow but steady improvement.

As for shoes, I love 5.10 Anasazis, but it probably depends on where you live and what type of stuff you want to climb

I asked about this in the QTDTTOT thread as well, but I figure you all maybe able to point me in the right direction.

I'm trying to learn about rope... not for climbing, but pulling a few logs up a rocky hill. Normally I would just use a come along, but I need to lift the front up over some rocks, and that mean I need some pulleys and rope. I can figure out the pulley part but I don't know where to start with the rope.

All the rope I have that's strong enough is to stretchy... ideally I'm looking for a somewhat static line, around 1/2", and with a 7,000lb+ load limit... I think I may end up with a 4 to 1 pull and with the come along that well could pass 7k... but I doubt the logs will put up that much fight, and I'll throw a towel over the line and make sure some trees are between me and it. Probably need 150 to 200 feet of it, but I don't know how cheap that would be, I'm guessing over $100

why do you want rope? i'd use braided steel cable for that kind of application. then you don't have to worry about it getting abraded. but if you really want rope i'd just go to homedepot.com or amazon and scroll through the options there. since you're not using it in a life safety situation there's no reason to pay the premium for climbing rope that is rated for such.
