Gotta ask though, I personally use my knife daily when I'm innawoods. It's multipurpose and all around a life saver just not so much in the context of "protection" so I gotta ask.

It's a safe bet that we pretty much all do some form of camping

That depends on where 'm going and for how long. I go 3-4 days with a little cowboy kit I made. It has your basics with a little fluff here and there.
1. 6" knife
2. 2 lighters or a ferro rod I recieved as a gift
3. Cord, paracord and bank line
4. Stainless steel 32 oz container filled with water
5. A wool blanket

I personally like colder climates and forests. I also bring a few more supplies for those conditions.

Usually I make my own shelter and sleep in it but lately I've been known to bring a tarp.

getting real food.
game and such while its available like small animals. (using small traps)
boiling water instead of bringing a purifier(immune suppressed)
and getting a fucking flare gun for those ohfuckohfuckwhathaveidone moments

Also if you'd be willing to spill your gameplan I'd be happy to provide some pointers. Though I'll admit Mountains aren't my strong suit.
Tell me about the area.
Know your weather. Knowledge is the lightest thing a man can carry into any situation.
Do you know what game is available in the area? Some places are better suited for sustainability (living indefinitely innawoods) while some are more survivability (getting by with a little luck/ passing through).

Every time I go backpacking or camping here in the Colorado Rockies I see nothin' but birds. Down here in the city you see squirrels and deer constantly, even coyotes foxes and bears. But I've never seen anything but birds when I hike. I'd love to encounter some deer or bear in a more natural setting just for the sightseeing, or even some rabbit or squirrel to practice my game dressing skills, but animals seem to avoid me like the plague innawoods. Am I cursed, or are animals especially shy in my area, or what?

animals are more tame around cities because no one hunts them there. there is a local forest preserve in chicago that goes along a small river (des plaines) and is surrounded by highways and residential neighborhoods on all sides. the deer there literally walk up to you if they think you have food. they get close enough that if you stretch out your arm you can touch them.

You also might be loud. Your loud and my loud are 2 different things. I'm talking about you might be making noise. Also I'd look into tracking. Finding an animal in its natural habitat is always awesome, but generally requires work. If you don't find tracks, odds are the animals you're looking for aren't in that area.

Also, the rifle. Weight on a trip where you'll be stationary (base camp) shouldn't be an issue. I'd go ahead and take it so long as you plan on using it. I'd also recommend learning how to prepare food in the woods. Give that a shot before you decide to rely on it while camping so you have some practice.

Also your 2nd day spent just hiking... I know common sense will kick in and you'll eventually gather firewood but I'd recommend a hatchet (i'm sure a parent or friend has one) to process wood if there isn't a lot available to you on the ground.
Note, butane lighters are pretty finnicky in cold temps. You might have to use body heat to get it to start lighting.

Here is what I take when I go camping, posting general advice after this post as well.

Tools:

tent
inflatable bedding with pump & sleeping bags (self inflatable foam is better but expensive)
metallic grill, place it between rocks or wood and place fire coals under.
large cooler with ice/ice packs
some very shitty chinese knifes that I need replace, advice?
3 cheap LED flashlights, AA rechargeable batteries
axe, mostly for protection because dead wood is so plentiful in the woods
colman gas lamp, amazing 1 canister lasts 7-8 hours on medium, hang it 15 meters away it attracts all the bugs and keeps your sitting area clear of bugs
foldable camping chairs, shit breaks too easily
build a coffee style table, bring a piece of flat plywood, hammer in 4 steaks and lay on top
metal kettle
large tarp in case of rain
boombox

Food:

Chicken, eat first night or it spoils quick
Frozen steak, burgers & hotdogs
Bread/buns
Ketchup/mustard
Vegetables: Tomatoes, Cucumbers/Pickles, Canned Corn/Peas/Beans, Potatoes in foil
Ramen in a cup for breakfast
Tea/Coffee/Sugar
Chocolate, snacks

Keep axe in tent when sleeping, if raccoon or bears comes around last line of defense or a gun would be nice but in Canada most people don't own a gun.
Keep light on during night, keeps some animals away and good when taking a night piss
If worried about animals passing through you can use a rope around your campsite and have it set off a bell or rocks to fall.
Burn all food scraps
Play boombox during the day to make noise to let animals knows you are there, especially if you decide to go for a hike around the area
Don't waste energy cutting wood, seriously so much dead wood in forests just pick it up and do a fire similar to the native 4 log fire. Where you place the ends of some logs and move them into each other as they burn.
Raccoons, chipmunks & mice are your worst enemy they will rip your bags and get food, raccoons will open a cooler easily even if it's locked. This has happened to me twice, so place shit in bags to keep smell out or hang on a tree if you can.
Watch out for moose, they can be very territorial. Saw a moose charge a boat ones.

Witnessed many deer and large hairs during camping when music was off people & people taking mid day naps. Deer will come to clearings near water to drink.

Foxes are very smart and will fuck around with you sometimes, stole a pair of work gloves from us one time.

Witnessed bears on other islands dozens of times when camping on islands, 1 time encountered bear while driving to camp site about 500 meters away. Huge bear with 2 bear cubs passing through, luckily we were in a car. Bear wasn't aggressive more fearful of us.

Watch were you take a dump, poison ivy or snakes. I once shit on a frog accidentally, took a squat then saw a shit covered frog run under me.

Other than that, my opinel 7, hammock, wire cutters (barbed wire is a bitch), firelighters incase I happen to find the one place in Scotland with no birch, kettle, mess tins, good coffee, hammock, lotsa cord, first aid kit, torch, batteries. Got a wee jet stove for quick coffee or if Im setting up in a national park - no fires.

If I'm going longer I take my tent but a nice parallel log fire, a hammock, a tarp strong above me (or not if the weather is freakishly clement) and gallon of rum or whisky.

And probably food. Chocolate, dried fruit, pasta boil in pot things. Not too easy to roam the countryside in Scotland with a gun, tho a few of my walking buddies are avid hunters of dear, rabbit n other things. Still, not the best thing to be traipsing about with. A slingsgot and plenty of big BB's is handy tho, lotsa pheasant shoots, those and grouse are dumb as fuck but taste good.

Other stuff that I've forgotten. Did I mention my hammock?

i very rarely post here, but i guess this thread got me because i just came back from a week long excursion into the chattahoochie national forest with my best friend.

my only regret is that we used a "designated" primitive camping site, which is not what i am used to. being within eyesight of the FR was not what i had in mind, but my friend is a bit of a rookie, so i guess it made him feel safer. i have since convinced him that more remote is more exciting.

i have a 72 hour bag. in it a mess kit, some pruning shears (sniper trick, mang), a 2 liter camel back, the SAS survival manual and a land navigation manual, rite-in-the-rain field book, pencil, 3 MREs, two lights, a vietnam era camillus (ka-bar clone. reliable as fuck), light work gloves, a monocular, brown 6x8 tarp, 3 candles (broken in half to make six and easier to store), folding e-tool, sog tomahawk (laugh if you will, but it lasted longer than my friend's actual axe.) sleep stuff and probably some shit i forgot about.

that being said, i also carry a fair amount of things on me. never leave home without your leatherman, or ways to start fire.
