I've found mushrooms I'm pretty sure are fly agaric, but I'd like to confirm before picking.

looks like amanita muscaria var. flavivolvata, yes it is "edible" and yes you can trip from it but do your research on how to do it properly beforehand

Probably A Muscaria var formosa. If you're looking to get high, according to the Audubon field guide, all you'll get from that is sweating and other uncomfortable feelings.

Well they are native to the northern hemisphere and "accidentally" in parts of the southern hemisphere , just be carefull yoy dont want to end up with a cute nurse pumping your colon while a doctor is forcing a 2" tube down your throat

Amanita frostiana actually. Didn't plan on eating it - it's local here, I just never saw it fruit. Color and cap tell all (orange and pink versus red).

OP here, update: I've figured the species out. It's Amanita frostiana, closely related to Amanita muscaria but not known to be edible or psychoactive. I've saved it to my log, and have disposed of the mushrooms into my compost pile out back.

To remove the bad effects, you have to dry out the shroom entirely to covert the harmful acid into Muscimol.

You then heat the dried up shroom in water then filter the stuff out.

You'll then have water + Muscimol, which is a strong GABA agonist. It'll feel like Ambien + a Benzo. Make sure you don't drink more than 1 shroom's worth.
