Ive been looking for a 'do it all' rod and have come to the conclusion that a MH/MF rod is it.

Anyone have experience with Dobyns rods? I have my eye on the FR 705CB.

Do their rods hold true to their ratings?

Id be using this rod for mid cranks, deep jigs, swimjigs, 4" paddle tails, spinners, weighted texas rigs and carolina rigs.

the ratings are inflated for the sb's. my 702 bends in the middle (medium) the 705cb is a good rod wouldnt call it an all rounder but you can try to do it. its sort of moderate so good with treble baits

How do I become a legendary fisherman and catch a true river monster? I caught my first pike a few days ago on a telescopic rod with a baitcaster (my whole kit cost me less than £30) I'm looking to upgrade but I don't really know what the fuck I'm looking for, shall I just buy random shit until I find what works or should I do some serious research first? Do some research on fishing forums where the boomers hang out, they know their shit when it comes to gear. I don't do any pike fishing, but I have found with conventional spinning or bait-casting tackle, going much above 150 dollars for a rod or 200 dollars for a bait-casting reel doesn't improve performance considerably, instead its mostly bells and whistles. If you are looking at a spinning set up I would just go for a pflueger president for the reel then pair it up with a decent ~150 dollar rod. You could fish that set up for a long time and never really want to upgrade.

What would be a good compromise instead of mono in my case? I live on a few flowages that have tree trunks and all sorts of other snaggy shit EVERYWHERE in my local waters. I usually use mono right now, even though it's not my first choice, because it's just less hassle to cut and re-tie after a good amount of inevitable snags. I want to go back to braid with a leader but it's kind of a pain in the ass to re tie all the time. I tried a few spools of flouro cause it seemed like a good middle ground and the price doesn't bother me too much but most of the stuff I tried would kink and tangle more than I liked. Should I just suck it up and do braid with a lead or is there something else I could do?

I have one. The drag is grabby, but I have it on a 3wt and pretty much never need it so not a big deal.

If you're planning on relying on the drag, you'll want a better reel. I've had good luck with the cheaper Okumas, have one on my 5wt that I've landed some humongous bowfin with, had the drag screaming and me well into my backing.

It fucks up trying to browse the catalog, and there is a risk of them seeing the image while the page is loading. I'm a fan of curly tail worms, I usually just cut them down to size if I want a smaller one. I usually get the powerbait ones that look like this (I think they're 4"), dark brown colors with speckles usually work pretty well for me in clear water.

Nah, you're just bad.
You're almost certainly fishing it too fast.
You can either drag it or hop it on the bottom, but it must be done slow.
And even if you're moving it the correctly you might not have it in the right area. Look for structure like rocks, weed beds, grass flats, timber piles, and bounce it 8n those areas.
Dragging in open water across mud can catch a fish, but it's far less productive.

theyre smaller, lighter, cast better and commonly come in 100-200 sized they also hold less line. there are larger low pro reels 300-400-500 sized reels that hold much more line than their 100-200 cousins and are still considered low profile. And then theres round reels which depending on size you get (they too come in smaller and larger models) Overall There isnt much difference these days between the two except for weight, shape, cast-ability, more choices of ratio and much better drag power. they all perform much better than your common abu round reel.

That's all they are. You just don't have to tie on both a weight and a hook. The advantage over something like a pegged weight is that it acts more like a mini drop shot, keeping the lure just off the bottom. Most people would also tie a drop shot higher than that.

Go fish duh. I haven't spent any time there so I don't know any really good spots. The only place I've been over that was is Goose Island state park, but I didn't fish for very long there.

But copano bay is a pretty popular spot so I'm sure you could figure something out.

Found this in a bait trap in a coastal region of South Carolina. I believe it is a tarpon larva. It was about the size of my index finger. Any ideas? If it is a tarpon, what larval stage is this? How old do you think it is?

You've probably been bitten but couldn't detect it. If you're using shitty gear like an Ugly Stik it will like trying to feel bites with a pool noodle. Get a non-shit MH/H rod and flouro line, or braid with a flouro leader. Practice. Fish them slowly around cover like you would a worm.
My PB last year >pic related was on a jig. Always have one tied on, and I've lost count of the number of 5+ pounders I've caught on them over the years.

Hitting the lake tomorrow.

Reports indicating that bass are between 20'-25' depth; low suspended or bottom. Water clarity last time I was there was pushing 4-6'.

What colors should I be throwing at this depth? Weather reports says sunny with little cloud coverage.

Thinking black and blue in the morning. Not sure what to toss in the afternoon.

I'm thinking of primarily tossing finesse jigs, shaky heads and texas rigs. Maybe a drop shot shad if all else fails.

There's these 2 huge boulders that are some 15-20' in diameter about 1500 feet from shore at high tide, probably at least 6-8' of water depending on how high the tide is. I see tons of birds sit up there cracking crabs and shellfish so I'm thinking that it might be worth kayaking out there on a high tide to try fishing around the base, since there almost certainly are fish picking up scraps around the base and it's the only structure on a tidal flat for miles. Should I bring cut bait like crab or squid or just jigs?

Literally anywhere that you don't expect to get hung up. Weedless jigs in my experience slightly decrease my hook up rate. I think i get better hooksets without them. It could just be me though.

Depends on what you wanna catch and what equipment you have available. Wading for reds and specks? Very easy. Spot fishing boners? Hard with a flats skiff, nearly impossible without. Soaking bait off a beach for whatever? Easy. Targeting wahoo? Big boat required.

Hardhead and gafftop cats will eat anything in the lower quarter of the water column. Pinfish can be caught in the shallows on hotdogs or bacon with a normal panfish rig.

How much does a fish finder really help? You can find all the fish in the world, but if they're not biting then they're not biting. Also, fish finders apparently have a ton of false positive readings, they're not all that accurate to begin with but for some reason people still shell out $200 up to a few thousand for one with all the bells and whistles.

Someone convince me they're a worthwhile purchase.

I use mine to find structure then use it to see if fish are holding on the structure.
I like the contour mapping, gps tracking, course setting and plotting. knowing the depth and finding highspots is always helpful.
fish id is bullshit and its always turned off on mine. I like that I can see schools of bait and what the bottom is made of. marking waypoints is great to return to spots you caught at or to retrieve traps..

at first it would seem like you dont need one, which you dont..but when you have all the info at your disposal you realize it makes sense. my time on the water is limited so why spend time guessing where the fish are?
though It also depends on the type of fishing you do..

If you're really experienced you can figure out what's a fish or a school of shiners or whatever. If you're doing vertical fishing especially ice fishing, on graph mode it is very helpful. If you're trolling or casting either spend 800+ on a unit or just get a simple one that shows the thermocline and the depth. I have your pic related. It works fairly well for me.

Some friends and I fished them for free for awhile in exchange for reviews. We decided they were decent to good for the price. My personal beef with them is the lack of noise that they make. It just felt wrong. Mechanically sound though, so use that how you will.

My fish finder drives my boat so I can fish without having to worry about holding it straight, only needing to make sure I'm not aimed at a dock or another boater.

It also has very good image quality, but it's not like every fish you run over will bite or every bite you get comes from a fish that you can spot with your sonar, so I worry about that less and about structure more.

Your post inspired me to make some too.
I made 5 with a 3/0 superline hook w/ 3/8 lead, and 3 with a 3/0 regular gauge with 1/4 tungsten.
I heard that it's okay to just tie your line to the top split ring, so I'm opting to not use a snap like yours.

Is it uncommon to catch sharks on topwater? Was fishing for blues and hooked into something that literally bit/took 2 of the back hooks off my super spook and spooled more than half of my 6500 Spinfisher. Werid thing is, I was only using a 30lb fluro leader and there wasn't any big abrasions in the line and I know if it was a shark that leader would of been a gone by the time he hit it.

Yeah it's probably find to tie direct to the split ring. The only reason I used a snap is because of the snap opening point; felt like it might be abrasive to the line should it keep rubbing up against it. Looking good.

Unless your 20 volt drill is a BAMF, this sort of thing is really only useful on very thin ice (in which case why bother?). The Clam bracket thing that replaces your whole drill chuck and gives you a traditional auger style handle works well, but isn't really much faster than hand augering and costs $80, so mostly these sorts of things are for people who don't have the conditioning to use a hand auger.

Are you one of those people?

I use a hand auger when there's less than 8 inches of ice and I have an Ion for when the ice is thicker and I don't want to waste the time it takes to hand auger just to scout for the depth gradient or drill 2 holes each for a couple people.

I run it through the the first 3 guides then just hold the line tight right before the reel. It helps if you have a friend to hold the spool of line, if not, just sit on the floor label up, or just make something to hold the spool of line.

My method: Mount reel on rod, run line through a few guides. Grab the line with a wet cloth and be sure you have a pretty tight grip. Start spooling.
Wet cloth is the key to avoid the line getting too warm. You might want to take a break both to rest your grasping hand and to check for heat.

And beware to wind the line off the spool the right way to avoid kinking it (spinning reel) and avoid birdsnests (baitcasters).

I'm stuck in this hell where we get a strong freeze for a couple days then a week or so of 25-40 days then another freeze. Our water is too damned cold for wading without insulated waders and always has a thin layer of ice that's only good for cutting your line. I can't wait for spring.

My method is to take my fly tying vise, take the vertical part out of the desk clamp part, put the rod through the spool and then put it back in so the top part of the vise and the desk clamp part put pressure on the spool, adjust to proper tension and then I lock it in place. Also a method of mine is to take one of those screw in hooks like pic related in the hole of the spool and drill it in the grass so it allows for some tension. I've found no matter how I spool something I have to tie it to a post in my backyard and walk to the end of my driveway and reel it in tight from there, especially if i have mono so it stretches out.

so given that i have this 75 pound thing to think of now i think it's safe to say a kayak probably isn't the right boat for me now. at the moment im thinking buy an aluminum boat on craigslist for $300 then spend $300 fixing it up (trolling motor, oars, a casting deck, maybe a small outboard)
thoughts? my biggest concern is that i wont be able to fish alone as well because i'll have to both move the boat in to position by myself and worry about getting a solid presentation. a kayak i could just silently paddle up to a spot, set the paddle down in the water, and make a presentation to a carp. but a boat with oars isn't all that quiet in my experience so im going to have to get a pole and learn to pole myself along the shallows stalking carp and then silently but quickly switch from poleing to making a presentation
either that or im going to have to find a local fishing buddy to accompany me on my bullshit trips so we can take turns making presentations. so i have no bloody idea.

you dont need a casting platform on a small jon. I made a casting bar on my boat with 2 hooks on it to hold a my rod and a stand up paddle. look for someone throwing away a jogging stroller and swoop it. its a easy DIY. when you get in range put the pole/paddle in its holder grab the rod and cast.
makes switching pretty easy... with a push pole you need to make 2 padded "V" on one side of the rail to hold it. padded to reduce and noise.
you can spread a blanket or small piece of tarp or make a stripping bucket to strip into basically to reduce any snags in the interior of the boat.
one of the key things I found is to pull out some line into the bucket so when you run up on a fish you dont have to waste time stripping out line to shoot. solo fly fishing is pretty easy to setup once you know what you need.

Maybe its just me but it seems kind of gimmicky. Why not just crawl a football head rigged craw plastic? This thing has a swimbait jig head look to it to me.

Any more experienced anglers able to offer thoughts on them?

Depends on the year. Few years ago the spawn in my local lakes (north county of San Diego) wasn't in full swing until mid-May. But yeah usually late Feb or early March is when they move up again
