I've used my FiveFingers to hike Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Delicate Arch at Arches NP, Emerald Pools and the Narrows in Zion NP, and for myriad other trails including sand, slickrock, talus, scree, boulder fields, and pavement. I have the KSO model; the upper is a very strong mesh that has lasted 3+ years of hard use for me. They are better than any boot at draining water and drying rapidly, and I've never had a problem getting sand in them.
>>143092Vibram FiveFingers are the best option for articulated toe shoes, without question. They offer unparalleled contact and grip with all surfaces, and are extremely lightweight. After getting used to them for a couple days of light walking, they are perfectly capable of hitting the trail. I have a pair of Merrell hiking boots, but typically use them for cooler temperatures.
