>>1436567>>1436614>>1436607European settlement of Tasmania has been a real win for the Bennett's and rufus wallaby populations. Europeans killed off their native predators, cleared massive tracts of land and introduced high energy grasses to the island. Consequently their numbers have reached plague proportions and are continuing to increase, despite all the crop protection culling, recreational hunting and road kill.
Regarding cats and pigs, whenever I see a cat out in the paddock, it dies. There are no feral pigs in Tasmania, but they are a problem on Flinders Island in Bass Strait.
Another feral species that is becoming a problem is fallow deer. Numbers are increasing but they are still considered a protected species with hunting seasons and strict bag limits imposed. I suspect this will change in the next two years, hopefully to a yearlong season.
