russian and east german are basically the same, ive got several of them. But after I got two size Large polish shelterhalfes I dont look back. They are just superior, better shape, lighter and nicer as raincape. Im a small guy, maybe 1,70 meters, and this thing still suits me as a long raincape and I still get to sleep in a nice big tippie shelter.

Much heavier than carrying a tarp but you can wear it as a layer to save space. You gotta wax 'em to really stay dry in weather.

If you button two together it wont be perfect seal but its usually pretty good, and as the canvas gets wet it becomes rigid and you can then kinda bend the seams to make rain flow away from the opening

It is perfect for winter camping. Pretty warm by itself, armholes can be used for a stove. You also don't need a tentpole if you find three pieces of wood that are big enough to make an outer frame, put a piece of wood inside the tip and tie it up from the outside. Tried it out as both clothing and shelter at about 0°C without stove. Had a simple inflatable sleeping mat and an OKish sleeping bag that wasn't realy made for these low temperatures. The Polish poncho tent kept the bit of heat there was pretty good inside and it kept the rain outside.
Pic is my tent made from two ponchos with outer frame.

Remember polish ponchos are in 3 sizes, (1: 160-170cm tall 2: 170-180cm tall 3: 180-190cm tall) 3 is the biggest, and also usually hardest to get or most expensive. (people ware shorter back them)
Well to remember that if you're getting 2 of them for tent, otherwise might have problem with fitting them together.

I think both would work. I have one size 2 and one size 3. Both fit me well and you can make a shelter with two different sizes.

They are pretty hard to find from my experience. The only one I found online was one on ebay for 100€. I'm from Germany by the way. My father was pretty lucky when he was visiting a market in Poland. He met some Ukrainian traders who bought old eastern gear surplus. He even found an old Kalaschnikow Bayonet. All Europeans probably have more luck searching at local markets. Don't know how it works for the Americans.

if you want to be fancy use steel tent pegs instead of sticks and cut a chimney size hole in a square of welding blanket then slide that over to keep the rain out of the arm hole

How is nobody going to talk about the fact that this poncho tent doesn't get water condensing on the inside? Had 3 other tents which always had water dripping on my face from condensation. This alone could make me prefer the pałatka. Stove compatibility, very good camo, good heat holding, and very good rain/snow poncho are other things that make me adore this thing. Went on a trip to polandia to buy these for me and a friend. Turns out you can buy one poncho for about 4$ there so 8$ for a whole tent. Army sells them on the web. A steal from my perspective

its kind of difficult. you may get lucky and find a decent condition used GI poncho (the woodland ones) for sale at ebay/surp store/gun show/etc but its hit or miss in terms of availability and condition. they usually run $20-$40. there are companies that sell new production “military-style” ponchos on amazon for like $20, but the dimensions are slightly off and I have read that the quality is sometimes poor. one of the new manufacturers that looks the most promising is called “fox” somethingorother, but I have no experience with them other than reading reviews

You need two to make a tent out of it. Two that fit each other zipper. Meaning you can go through entire stock that's in your barracks and never find two matching ones. Bonus points if you just buy them as milsurp.

I'm still using fisherman waders (the heavy duty ones) from DDR that are literally older than me. Shit's so resistant I'm amazed each sailing season it's still fine and works. Meanwhile I've lost count how many jackets I've replaced for past 25 years. I wish the oilskin that go with the waders was keeping you warm a little bit more, so I could just use it instead of different kinds and types of jackets, but I guess you can't have everything.

Last year I lived at an old mill in former East Germany. Plenty of old DDR stuff still lying around and just *working*. The dude I was living with also told me how the DDR military equipment was also superior to the West's equipment (particularly the boots). I live in Berlin now, and apparently there's a very good surplus store near Warschauerstrasse that I'm going to check out for DDR equipment.
