They're that much normally at Walmart. I've got one that I brought back to Australia. It's sharp enough to shave, holds a good edge fair enough, but I wouldn't use it for any impact work.

I paid over $100 for a big Ruko spanish bowie knife many years ago, and this knife isn't all that much different and actually has a better full tang instead of the welded one on the Ruko, slightly larger and thicker blade and wood handle.
After sharpening the Winchester, take it to a leather strop. You may have to resharpen more often but for the price you cant go wrong..

It’s a full tang 20$ knife probably made of 440 stainless. I own one it just sits on my bedside table collecting dust, I have a machete under my bed too doing the same. I have a bunch of knives and use a fillet knife for fish and a cleaning set for game. I haven’t gone camping in forever but might take it for fun if i did.

Yeah well after a week or two it won't look new at all. I ordered the Mossy oak Walmart bowie. I did offer some schmuck $12 for a Winchester Bowie on eBay. It was definitely used and I like the character of someone else's used and abused tool. But not for preparing my family's food with some fools knife though. Fuck that. But wouldn't mind a 2nd one for a backyard thrasher. I just hope it's not fuck huge. I'm not splitting wood with it. Steel quality don't matter. I have $80 kitchen knives and $8 cutlery and with my sharpening skills you wouldn't know the difference kids.

In a way, he's right. You mostly notice a difference in rust resistance over edge retention in practical use. Shaving and chopping wood is really easy on edges.

CATRA results tend to only show differences of 2 or 3 to 1 in the top PM steels to the basic ingot steels for edge retention. The material you're cutting is generally more important here as the differences are far more than 3 to 1.

Ease of sharpening is greatly overlooked.

I'd still put more money into it like my rec here >>1438337

No, they won't.

You can only tell under controlled testing environments, i.e., you sit down and cut the exact same material until you get to whatever you deem as blunt. Even then, you're only going to get similar to the CATRA results, i.e., 3 to 1 at most. ZDP-189/S110V will only beat out VG-10 by about 3 times.

If you're just using it on everyday materials, the materials are going to be a bigger factor than the steel. One material can blunt a knife 8 times more than another material, for example. Most people just use their knives on a variety of material and don't to tightly controlled testing.

I think the question is whether those differences justify the cost of more expensive steel. For someone on a budget needing the knife for occasional light use, the practical difference is mainly going to be sharpening it more often.

I hunt, fish, have a small acreage, forage, and used to work in the bush as a forest surveyor. I use my knives, and not for seeing how much paracord or cardboard my knife can cut through before dulling. I can tell easily tell, for example, differences in edge retention and ease-of-sharpening between 12C27 and S35V. And you could too if you actually paid any attention and used knives regularly.

Trying to say "steel is steel" is basically the argument one would expect from a poorfag newbie afraid of $50+ knives or an old hack intimidated by the rise in steel nerds and feeling like he has to defend his Buck 110 to the death.

Your argument is attempting to refute metallurgic principles on the basis of "I don't believe there is a reason to spend more money than I do on knives".

Let's face it though, for the common dude who goes /out/, that shit barely even matters. The specific type of steel only matters if you're very much into that, otherwise it just boils down to high carbon v.s. stainless.

You want to get specific on the kind of steel you like, and good on you, but don't expect everyone to give a shit. Especially not if there's a big price tag attached. When you get into high-end knives, you very much overpay for only a small increase in performance. In my opinion, if you're paying 300% more for a 40% increase in performance, you've overpaying and are mildly retarded.

I have a Case knife from the 1950s. The sheath is falling apart, but the knife itself is fine. A little worn from repeated sharpening, but still well over 90% of the blade is left. At that rate, the knife can easily last another 400 years.
But let’s just say that from now on you’re much harder than the average person on that same knife. You hunt hard, carry it every day with you everywhere, and when it gets dull, you only sharpen it with a file. That now-65-year-old knife would still last you another 40+ years before it started wearing away and losing length on the blade. And that’s for a knife I found used for $25.

So while you’re right that things do wear away, it takes a LONG time for that to happen. The vast majority of people will break a handle, bust a hinge pin or spring, or just get tired of a knife well before the steel in the blade ever wears clean away from use or sharpening.

I have hundreds of knives in literally every steel you can find, and I notice almost no difference in actual practical cutting between the lowest carbide steels to the highest.

In practical use, edge rolling and chipping, and stainlessness, have been the only difference I've found to be worth anything of note, and ease of sharpening (I use DMT stones, so it doesn't matter much here).

This has Spyderco's CATRA results. Note how ZDP-189 (one of the highest carbide steels around) won't even cut twice as much as 440C.

it's pretty useless for judging edge retention

my kitchen knives have different steels. it was pretty easy to notice that the VG10 knives stayed sharp for much longer than the cheaper stuff, Calphalon junk.

of course it would be hard to notice any difference if you barely use your knives.

Pro chef here again. My line cooks will take a cheapo bulk-buy NSF prep knife from shaving-sharp to butterknife in an hour but will get a couple days' use out of a $100 Wusthoff and it'll still probably be sharper than most department store steak knives are out of the box. But that's a huge gap in steel quality and hardness ("420 stainless" from China with typical Chinese total lack of quality control vs. German foundry cert'd 1070 with industry-best QC).

Somewhat, but Spyderco uses blanks with similar geometry. Basically their MULEs.

So, they're accurate insofar as the method of cutting CATRA does (basically push cuts with the same force till dullness).

VG-10, only does half of ZDP-189, under this very constrained variables. You won't notice that IRL.

I'll rotate about a dozen folders for EDC each year, and again, I notice no difference in the steel in regards to edge retention. A D2 RAT-1 doesn't behave any different to an AUS-8 one in my box, package, junk and the occasional rope cutting around farms.

If everything is tightly controlled and you put them threw testing where almost everything can be accounted for, then sure, you'll find the D2 version to do better.

All I notice is that D2 rusts if you don't dry it off.

Continuing, I do notice a bigger difference in behavior with fixed blades and chopping/prying, but this is more related to edge stability and strength over retention. Chipping, rolling, tips breaking, and so on.

They all carve wood equally well and I've never dulled a blade from making shavings and stakes unless I hit a knot.
