Additionally more than 30% of North Americas' land area is either arid or semi-arid (>300mm and >500mm precipitation respectively) not including arctic environments, however usually only the arid regions are considered true deserts, most semi-arid regions aren't considered true deserts despite still having scant rainfall and high evaporation rates.
Southeastern Washington, Eastern Oregon, and the western edge of the Great Plains states are some examples of semi-arid areas that are not true deserts but still decently desolate.
