Danoff and his then-wife, Mary ("Taffy") Nivert, wrote "I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado" and "Take Me Home, Country Roads", both of which were hits for John Denver. Danoff (from Springfield, Massachusetts) has stated he had never been to West Virginia before co-writing the song.

The bridge to the song was still missing, so the three of them, began finishing the song in the living room of Danoff’s apartment. Taffy got out an encyclopedia to learn a little more about West Virginia, and the first thing that came up was the Rhododendron, the state flower, so she kept trying to work the word Rhododendron into the song.

Its an economically poor state, but god damn is it beautiful. I grew up near Pittsburgh, and going down to West Virginia was always a treat. Easily some of the best run and maintained state parks in the country.

Cooper's Rocks, Blackwater Falls, Dolly sods, Seneca Rocks... All beautiful places to just get /out/. I live smack dab in the middle of the Texas national forests these days, and it just ain't the same.

Those places were cool before they became infested with urbanites from nether regions.

Don't get me wrong, the Laurel Highlands is still a paradise. The FSjust needs to step up and move the parking back to down in the valleys. Shitheads aren't going to do a 3000 foot ascent just to start their hike. I hear even Otter Creek is infested with faggots now

I mean... the laurel highlands is what they mostly call the Allegheny mountains in PA. Its pretty much the same geologic schtick going on all the way through the end of maryland, and through WV, before you hit the crazy folding of the Appalachians, though. You look at a physical map, and you can see where it changes.
