Any advice on freight hopping? I've got around 3 weeks before I have to be gone, however I'd like to be gone before then. I know I'm going from VA to the west, however I don't know where I'll stop or if I'll stop. I have about 200 dollars in cash but I've got just about everything else I need before I leave.

Nah. I've just had to scrape bits of railway hobos off the tracks too many times, there needs to be a significant threat to keep them from doing something that dangerous and stupid.

Trains aren't what they were in the 60's. There's NO safe or even semi-safe way to hop a train any more.

The drivers have to deal with that, they have to deal with the fact that they just killed you. Through no fault of their own, they now have to sleep with the thought that a man died right in front of them.
Now think about the people who will have to clean up your body, think about passing children who will have to see your mangled corpse.
Be sensible, don't hop trains. And if you're going to an hero, do it privately.

Anon, suicide is not what nature wants you to do. Animals do not give up and kill themselves, a tree doen't give up if it's in a shitty spot. They keep going and going until either they make it or die trying. Do what you need to in order to clear your head of the bullshit, if that means going and being a hermit in the mountains then do it. I'm setting out on a 2.5 month thru hike in less than a month for this very purpose.

I didn't mean I was going to jump infront of a train, I just meant that I would rather go homeless and see the world than end up wasting away where I am now until I inevitably end up dead or worse. I understand the dangers to myself and others and please don't think of me as an idiot, I've ridden trains in the past, however for short distances instead of trans-continental. Speeds have increased, doors and shit are locked, more reliable train car assemblies mean that most manufacturers make no concessions to humans traversing moving cars, because the engineers don't have to be able to do this to go unstick brakes and shit any longer.

I'm a rail maintenance guy. I've found or been part of the cleanup for 84 fatalities and an additional 102 where we found parts but couldn't determine if the guy died (usually fingers). I've only been doing it 6 years.

Can it be done? Obviously, there's recent videos of it. Does it kill or maim a large number of people? Fuck yes.

I was just going to ask if there are still any operational trains that still use stereotypical boxcars like you see in movies. I’m 34 and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one. Every train I see consists of either coal cars or open flatbeds that haul equipment.

There is SO much shit on a train that can take a finger I can't say any one thing is the primary culprit.

I know the dump cars get a lot of worker fingers because they have sharp edges that like to catch things like glove cuffs and wedding rings, can't say how many trainhoppers they get though.

The most gruesome fatality I was involved in was a guy got pinched between a pair of reefers during a tight curve. All we found were bits of clothing and blood smears but the smears covered basically all of both ends of the cars and a significant streak down the side of the trail car. I'm guessing the majority of him fell out as soon as the train straightened out and is back on the tracks somewhere.

I've also found a couple that had frozen to death/died of hypothermia without falling off then froze solid.

Boxcars are still around in limited use but they don't look like the old ones. Palletized loads and milvans are so much fucking faster to load and unload the oldschool boxcar is kind of a specialty car now. I see them on occasion but they are rare as fuck.

OP it’s not what it used to be. Less rideable cars, seriously heightened security, locals call the police on migrants in small towns (first hand experience).

When you are in a town you have never been, and you are trying to catch out desperately you easily end up doing something stupid like trying to hop on grainer in a freight yard only to piss off the yard workers and get the police on you after you already told them you aren’t riding freight.

With that said, never ever fuck with the yard. Find the last train bridge in town, find a bike path that runs parallel with the track, find some woods outside of the yard. Don’t stand out.
