I always used internal frame packs for a while, until I got curious about external frames. Tried out a Kelty Tioga, which is massive, and it is excellent. Only complaint was that the hip belt straps kept slipping, but that's an easy fix.
Weight isn't too bad by the pack alone, and the external frame is better for ventilation (I'm in Texas), and I was able to carry twice the load I usually do, comfortably (took the fiance on her first backpacking trip; I overpacked and let her do the same to test this pack out).
It's not for everyone, but it would easily work on extended trips, and is pretty comfortable. Pretty cheap against the alternatives, though.
