How long can I carry a pheasant for before heading home?

I live in an area where there's pheasants being shot or run over often, and I want to put their meat to use. How long can I carry the corpse (assume it's a fresh kill) around with me for before I need to refrigerate+hang it? Asking because sometimes I'm anywhere between 1-9h.
I would assume it's not OK past 1-2h due to bacteria, but then again hunter-gatherers travel huge distances from the village so idk.

It depends on temperature and gut rupture. If it is 38F or below it can take pretty much forever (days) since that is dry aging for meat temps. If it is warmer then 12-24 hours. If the guts are smeared all over he place then forget it. The problem comes from the meat being open and exposed to bacteria. If everything is all closed up, migration of microbes takes a very long time. That means an unskinned animal that has been gutted will last far longer than a cut steak in your fridge. Simply because the animal hasn't had the meat exposed to open air while the steak has been sliced and exposed to open air.

The instant you open the meat to air a faster timer begins that is more sensitive to temperature. Regardless, if you are out and about, get an animal & won't be home for a long time, buy some ice and a cheap foam cooler if it is available. Keep it on ice until you get home. If not, just try to keep it cool. Something as simple as wrapping it in plastic then with a slightly damp towel can cool it 10-40 degrees depending on humidity (evaporative cooling).

I mean people in france and england will hang pheasants for up to a week (sometimes even with the guts in), and apparently it makes them taste even better. So as long as it's cool enough you should be more than fine at the end of a day long hunt

Roadkill is generally bruised as fuck. A lot of it will be inedible.

Sorry for knowing literally nothing about hunting etc. If you did find a roadkill pheasant, how would you know if it was going to be edible? (Assuming it's not burst open and turned into tarmac jam)

Really you only have 2 options:
1: find one and bring it back as soon as you get it or 2: find one then go fucking around all day waiting for it to get bad

If you want to eat it and you have it, just bring it home and clean it. It's not rocket science. If it's already noticeably bad, leave it.

People hunt for a day sometimes and bring everything home at night - if you're killing it yourself, just do that.

If the weather is cool or cold, you can literally hang them for days, just like aging beef. Process like normal (cut out the shot damage and discard). I know people who hang their birds in the garage overnight every time. When hunting, I process mine at the end of the day, even birds I've shot first thing in the morning, unless it's warm out, say, above 70 degrees. In winter in most places where pheasants live, you're good for a long time. Same goes for other small game.
