Pedaling hard up a hill? I understand you're going to weave a little bit. BUT SCOOT THE FUCK OVER so those of us with engines can get around your slow ass. And if there's a bike lane, FUCKING USE IT!

Also, if you're on the road, obey the rules of the road. This applies to stop signs and red lights. Do this, ride predictably, and have some respect for those on the road. It works both ways.... i'm a lot less likely to hammer down in the diesel if you're not riding like an asshole. (This applies to you in the hybrids and "smart" (lol) cars too - not every vehicle on the road can stop on a dime when you cut someone off, especially if there's a trailer behind said vehicle.)

Two wheels is a great way to commute. I can't say I haven't used the small size to my advantage on more than one occasion. (Mine just has an engine and is capable of highway speeds.)

Also didn't mean to sound like I hate all pedal-bikers... There's a lot of them that I have zero issues with. But there's always "that guy" that makes the rest look bad.

I'm a local and I bike the handful of miles to my job and back when the weather isn't four feet of snow on the ground. I had to deal with an 'nyc bike delivery boy' and I about killed him when I had class with him. I've rarely met such a huge douche bag.

I started cycling to work two years ago. It's 10km each way, almost all bike path next to a river. Feels great, turned fat into muscle and being outside is nice.

I also use it to get around the region, more broadly.

I love bicycling. I just got into it with an El-Cheapo bike, sort of as my practice bike. I'm using it to understand maintenance and what it's like to get around on one. Nothing beats the feeling of saying you just went several dozen miles powered by your own two legs.

Stupid ass stereotype. There's hundreds of mile of bike trails around here and it's very popular.

I ride a bike a lot for recreation as do most around here. The only people I ever see looked down upon are BMX rats. Bunch of dirty stealing juveniles that lot.

1. True, which is why I have a truck in the garage. But most of the time, it stays in the garage.
2. Yes, see #1. Just commuting to/from work or running a quick errand, I have no need to take a passenger. If someone wants to go out for lunch at work, they can drive (or a couple of us ride our motorcycles).
3. I'm glad mine has an engine.
4. No such thing as bad weather, just inadequate gear. There's a lot of options for rain gear when it comes to motorcycles. Start at the top with a helmet/visor and work your way down. Rain, snow, or ice hasn't stopped me yet. Pic kinda related.

You can make a rather sturdy one with thin-wall conduit and other parts from a hardware store. Things being financially tight for you means it may take a bit to save up, but people use them to haul some fairly impressive loads.

Also, purchase a dry bag or two, and carry a spare set of clothes to work in case of rain. Problem solved.

I don't have a huge amount of experience, but I did have two cheap-ass walmart bikes shit out on me before I finally bought a decent (used) bike. Even better, the Walmart bikes were ~$160 a piece and my used Raleigh was $100 at the local Schwinn shop. Had it for about three years now and it's working great.

I do live in a large city. But bikes are good for maybe a 10 mile radius if you're decently fit and have a decent bike. The bigger problem outside the city center is that major suburban roads are dangerous and the side streets don't go anywhere and the malls don't always have bike racks.

If it's raining in the morning I take the subway. Don't care if I get wet on the way home because I can change when I get there. It's only a few days out of the year that it's actually a problem though.

Use lights. Don't cheap out on the front light too much because that's the important one (so cars don't turn in front of you). When I drive I find cheapo bike lights hard to see against all the other lights. I'd suggest a Planet Bike Blaze 2W headlight and whatever red blinky on the back for city riding.

Drivers waiting to turn left seem to estimate my speed by the brightness of my light, so ideally I want them to think I'm a motorbike.

I had one in college and it cost enough in parts and effort to keep it going (even doing all the work myself) that I would have been better off spending more up front on a proper bike.

That stops being fun when you realize you're the only one racing. I just hold my pace and usually catch up with guys like you 300m down the road when your legs give out.
