What are you side sleepers using? I was thinking of copping this one. It looks like it gets great reviews in regards to comfort but it's apparently a prick to put it back in the sack with some people even ripping the sack.
The nemo air pads are the thickest listed on REI; maybe I'll look into that instead.

Zlite pad if I want to hate myself in the morning.
Forget what air pillow.
I had a 3.5" pad before, but I didn't really like it, if my hand or whatever was off the side, it ended up hanging in the air and getting sore in the morning. Horizontal baffles seem to be the shit for side sleeping imo.

I've been mostly fine using ccf pads for years. Sometimes my shoulders become a little sore and my arm, on the side I'm sleeping on, falls asleep.
Tried using a Neoair Xlite torso length pad on a most of my hikes last year, but that thing is so narrow that often times my hips fall of the pad, and I wake up with backpain from sleeping with a twisted spine.
I wanted to love it, but unfortunately it doesn't work for. Sold it to a buddy.

Thinking of trying a prolite in small or x-small next, but for now I'm back to ccf pads.

I have a mess kit system so I can cook my food system over my fireplace system where my fire system burns. Then I eat my meal system with my spork system and get in my sleeping system under my shelter system, this way I can enjoy my dream system through the night. After my alarm system wakes me I put on my boot system and move on by foot system after I packed into my backpack system. This is my /out/ing system.

Oh btw I'm using a apex 167 quilt from as tucas (long/wide version). Also recently got a quilt 250 from cumulus, but haven't tried on the trail yet. Should be nice for late spring, summer and early fall.

Bought an Exped sleeping pad recently. R value of 6, inflated without using my mouth (or a pump). It makes a big difference in the winter, and it's compact enough to use year-round.

Any tips for the beginner camper looking to use a sleeping bag? I don't have a car and don't want to haul a heavy tent on hikes. I'm also worried about ticks biting me while I sleep since I live outside of Ottawa, any suggestions?

Get a fully enclosed bivy, it goes right over a sleeping bag, and if you get the right one, it can weigh right around a pound. Ticks won't get through, and it still feels like you're just sleeping in a sleeping bag

Also being a side sleeper (which is normal) I did some research into pads. Ended up getting a sea to summit comfort plus. R value us 5. Weight is 27.6 oz.

It's quite comfortable, but I don't think it's r value is quite high enough for temperatures below 25. Also I wish I had a lighter weight pad.

I think therma rest has the market cornered as far as pads go. But the comfort plus is pretty good and seems durable to me.

anyone has experience with bivy bags?

I want one to replace my tarp, ideally light and either in green/black or camo. As cheap as possible.

Atm I'm looking at the dutch military bivy (EUR60), the Mammut Grevling EMT (only water repellent, EUR60) and some no name bivy I found on ebay that's made out of ripstop nylon (EUR30).
Any experienced users here who can help me out?

I don't think the dutch bivvy can completely replace a tarp at least unmodified. I used it on its own and was mostly dry (or at least I didn't get the impression that my carinthia Tropen had gotten wet) but the closure system is pretty terrible (velcro flap and no zipper because it's a multipart system and you only have one part) and if I hadn't been on an incline the water that did get into the bivvy through my idiocy and the dumb closure system might have been an issue.
Sitting upright in the bivvy (preventing rain from getting in from the front) maintained my impression that it was waterproof when I finally gave up on sleep and just decided to wait out the rain.

I'm not the kind of person who likes having his face rained on but if you are then this is probably tolerable.

A nylon bivvy is probably going to be condensation hell.

For ground Isolation/bivvy

I tried this setup with a Rab Ascent 500 down bag with -25c/-13f

But the bag had too little fill and turning gave me cold spots.

It wasn't shivering cold but warm is something different.

None of that with synthetic insulation like climashield apex for example.
One does have to deal with the increased bulk and weight though. A down quilt layered with an apex outer quilt is ideal in cold weather imo.

Like I said in the post after the one you replied to, I ordered a bulky and synthetic bag from Carinthia.

They are a European(Austrian) maker and supplier of military sleeping bags and outdoor/hunting gear. Also got a fleece liner for it. That one should get me with this setup to -25c at least, I assume.

I just had a hope that maybe the Jervenbag with it's own lining would upgrade my 3 seasons down bag to a winterbag. But that wasn't going to fly. Because I still felt the need to ventilate the Jervenbag which of course made me lose some heat.

And the gap between the comfort rating of the sleeping bag and the temperature was too big for that to work.

I have a friend who uses a jer en sometimes. One trip we went on he did exactly what you described and used it as a bivvy, no tarp over him. See med to work well enough for him. Meanwhile I was under my MLD trailstar with my down bag wearing every single item of clothing I had (and as such was plenty warm). Granted, it wasn't as cold as you described (probably between - 8c and - 10c).
It rarely gets colder than that here (Denmark).
I was reading the other day how putting a ccf pad on top of an airmat should work better than putting it under, when it comes to added insulation.
Could be interesting to try. However, personally, I can't seem to get good sleep on an airmat.

Fuck that, get a backpacking tent. Kelty salida is only $100 and works great. Bivvy is literally coffin-tier, takes away a lot of the comfy experience of camping

Then depending on the season get a lightweight sleeping bag, if you're only doing summer you can get lightweight 35F/0C bags for $50, check craigslist.
Then just get a thermarest zlite sleeping pad.
All this should easily fit in a 60L backpack and if you get used to backpacking first it will open many other possibilities down the road

Oil-skin canvas bed roll with wool liner & wool blanket with cotton sheet separating me from the wool. Pic semi-related. It is heavier than my cast iron skillet, but I sleep pretty well in winter.

I think the blanket is pendleton, but it is like from 1970s era. The canvas is just some random canvas I had. Same with the sheet. I'm not sure what it weighs, 10lbs maybe? It is the heaviest piece of kit. As far as packing, it rolls up like any other bed roll which means bulky like this image.

In the end it was -11c and the setup with the 3 season bag does work for -11c with some toastyness to spare. I also changed the foam mat on top of the air matress like you said.

My Carinthia bag has arrived. It will be -18c tonight and that's also the comfort rating of this thing. I'll test it on its own and see how it'll do. I also have a fleece liner for it that should add 5c rating.

I'm pretty sure that thing combined with the Jervenbag will survive or thrive in everything the Arctic will throw at me.

I ended up testing my new bag with this setup at -19c, even without the fleece liner. Just over the edge of it's rating. And the rating is more than satisfactory if you ask me.

With some radiant heat from a fire, the added liner, or the addition of the Jervenbag I'm sure I'll at least survive anything the Nordics throws at me. And be comfortable for most of it.

For this test I put the Exped on top tho, didn't want it scraping the concrete of my balcony. But the bag prevented cold spots.

Yeah I know, And so are bag ratings itself. But the bag has proven it's rating so far. And the fleece is pretty thicc.

But unfortunately the temperatures seem to have a temporary rise. I need to wait to test the liner. But it seems like a good blanket/bag for summer use anyway.
