Lure color section for Southern California. Which ones?

I hear each part of the country has colors which work in their areas, but not in others. Yeah, you have your typical Black, White, Chartreuse and Shad colors.. along with your 'match the hatch'. But I want to know what off or odd colors also work for this region.

I’m just getting into fishing after 20 years of almost never fishing. With braided line do you tie on a leader of mono at the end? It looks like it would be visible in the water. Thanks for your help!

you can tie a leader onto your braid if you would like to. Most people use fluorocarbon line because it maintains sensitivity. If you are fishing for freshwater predators though imo you dont even need to bother.

Leader in clear or relatively visible water.

Divide your braid test by half and round to the closest fluorocarbon test to pair.

Use an Alberto Knot for the connection. An FX Knot will drive you crazy and the Alberto is just as good.

What are you fishing for? Flouro is best leader material with braid mainline because the invisibility and it’s abrasion resistance. Mono leader would mostly be good to have some shock protection since it’s fairly stretchy and springy but I only really hear about that with saltwater

Anyway I fucked with the flouro leaders for a little bit and didn’t notice any difference. If you’re bass fishing, they don’t give a fuck about some 15lb moss green braid. It’s not worth the trouble unless you’re going after some highly pressured stocked trout in ultra clear water.

California's fishing in general is hyped up only due to the many record breakers that come out of a very few lakes. San Diego itself only reports between 10-15 double digit fish annually. The fishing is actually pretty shitty due to the high pressure.

Learn to tie the knots or at least keep a cheat card with you, learn to set a hook properly, bring pliers, bring the right gear for the species you're going for, be very careful of using hooks that are too small or prone to be swallowed whole. Unless you don't know what you're doing err on the side of caution and go for the larger side of a range you'd use for a particular species.

Easiest way to start would be going for panfish, get a lightweight rod and reel some #2 or #4 aberdeen hooks, some floats and whatever the fuck bait and a few basic lures like a spoon.

Not a crappie. Doesn't have the dark spot at the back of the dorsal fin so not a bluegill. Maybe a Redear? Very small operculum flap so not a longear or a redbreast. Probably a redear.

Looking for recommendations on a 3 box system. Whether I'm bank fishing, or on my float tube, I can at max carry 3 boxes of baits at a time. This is what I currently have in mind, but can use suggestions or refinements. This does not include my soft plastic bag, or my terminal tackle box.

I’ve had some small success with purple soft plastics, namely pb&j and electric blue. Ox blood red flake has been recommended a few times to me, but I haven’t had any luck with it. I dunno if they’re that good colors, but it’s something to try.

Yeah they discontinue the three forks rod last i checked. The echo base is my new go to beginner rod. The redington crosswater is good, too, better than the fenwick eagle fly rod. Theyre all still as good as or better than a $500 rod from the 90s.

I have a 100 gallon ice chest with a water pump and spray bar, so I generally keep my catch alive when I'm boating. Ice fishing, I've got a tube net that goes down an extra hole which keeps the fish alive and fresh. I generally don't keep fish when I'm bank fishing.

I may set up a stock tank with a pump and spray bar for at home, because I'm tired of cleaning fish at 2-4 am because I was chasing the night bite.

Been on a two month long skunk streak.

Decided to do an hour session after work yesterday fishing off my bay. Got some bites and something that ripped the tail off my swimbait. Think I'll be transitioning over to salt water for a few more weeks until pre-spawn kicks into gear; seems to be a lot more activity.

What's your go to saltwater bass colors? That hit was off a chartreuse paddle tail.

What's best for tipups? lures, live bait, or artificial bait? The lake has mostly bass and perch and I'm not picky I just want to catch something. Got the most bites on worms but they just kept stealing the bait without getting hooked, I'm probably just putting them on the hook wrong because I never use worms so idk how.

A small park pond near me is super heavily pressured. I still usually do okay with either 4" dropshots or throwing giant swimbaits because nobody else does.

I know a handful of guys who seem to be pretty successful switching to a fly rod in popular spots. idk if there's any truth to fish being more interested in new stuff but it seems to work.

Set tip ups for bass. Large shiner. You can use smaller minnow too but it gets really annoying if you are on perch because you will have to reset it every second. Jig small 3-7mm tungsten jigs with one or two spikes (not wax worms) with your rod for perch and set the tip ups for bass. If you are getting little bites but can’t hook one you are on a school of dinks

I've only ever caught ice bass on a small sweedish pimple with a waxworm tipped. Im assuming they would hit it if it didnt have a waxworm on it and just thought the soon was a minnow. Small crappie minnows are probably your best bet since bass dont like committing to carrying around a massive sucker in their bellies for two weeks on a slow metabolism

This. I regularly go to this tiny park pond and outfish everyone for dink bass on either craft fur baitfish, clouser minnows, or fuzzle buggers. I do well in most pressured fishing areas. Sometimes people ask me what im using and i give them one of the flies that i dont want in my fly box anymore, but that I'm too lazy tp cut off the hook and retie. "Tip this with a worm, maggot, or anything else really and you should catch something."
Usually they're kids and they look up at me like im jesus when i tell them where to cast the tipped fly and they catch something. I wonder if the parents think im a pedo, hate that im teaching their kid to to fish instead of them, or glad that someone who has a vague idea of what to do beyond drowning worms saved the fishing trip. Probably some combination.

I remember as a kid getting into fly fishing everyone I saw on the water gave me a couple flies and advice. I saw a kid at a fishing show who was just getting into fly fishing so I bought a bunch of flies and gave them to him after talking to him and his dad. It feels good to pass it on especially when you know how much kids like that look up to more experienced fishermen.

How deep? I've been using P-line for ice fishing, the flouroclear, coated copolymer. I fished for lakers in 40-50 fow, and I was able to feel my spoon crash down when jigging and I even felt a 15 inch laker bite all the way 40 feet down. I also use it in 4lb in like 18 fow for bass and bluegill and what not. I can feel even tiny bites. It does have a bit of stretch to it though.

I've never used braid before in my life though, and I am looking for one that doesnt ice up for hole hopping. I hear the braid is the most sensitive, and some people swear the ice braid that Berkley makes is really good. I don't have a shanty and I'm assuming neither do you since you want mono.

A word of advice for you if you decide to use any mono in cold weather, don't overspool it otherwise it seems to slinky off the spool and get inside the reel or cause knots that are near impossible to get out with the stiff carrots that your fingers turn into when they're cold.

All these 'pro' fishermen are fishing in no more than 10' of water. Hell, if I fished in unpressured lakes at 10' I'd be getting 30lb bags too.

There's a large gap between natural flat lakes and reservoirs.

I want to know what body you guys fish, what you fish with bait wise, at what depths, and how successful they are during the various times of the year.

I'd like to try winter saltwater fishing from the shore or pier. My grandfather said he used to catch winter flounder a lot along the Atlantic coast and I know it's kind of a niche interest for people who don't like ice fishing.

I don't really have luck with cranks at all in pressured water, but I do tend to have okay luck with giant soft body swimbaits or jerkbaits (Super Fluke or bigger) rigged weightless or with minimal weight, and giant worms (Zoom Ol' Monster, Mann's Jelly, Zoom Swamp Crawler, etc) fished Carolina rigged.

I think a lot of it is it's a presentation style they don't see much if at all (most of the pressured shit here is really shallow so most people fish T-rigs or dropshots on short drops, or they cast swimbaits on a jighead and burn them in pretty fast).

I've also had some luck in pressured water with small, single-Colorado-blade spinnerbaits fished as slow as I can go and still have the blade turn. I've even gone as far as buying Strike King Micro Kings and swapping to an oversized Colorado blade on them.

Someone tell me I'm not crazy about this idea.

Came to me while I was at work today. It's a craw specific jig head that also includes a chatter bait style blade on the bottom.

The blade would be shaped like a craw tail that would rattle as you reel in. You would apply a soft plastic craw bait to the hook to complete the presentation.

The other only bait I've seen in a similar fashion had the line tie directly on to the tail, and not to a ball-head medium. The tail tie I feel detracted toward the swimming motion and didn't include a sound element one would have with a blade.

I think it could work, but if you're going for realism I think it'd be better to have a weight that's more evenly spaced so it falls flatter. Crawfish don't do a tail dive immediately after they stop moving. But you'd still want it to be slightly tail heavy so if you kill it the claws stick up like its in a defensive position

Storing bait - minnows, worms, whathaveyou - in the fridge would be close to ideal though.
ONCE out of many times I had some nightcrawlers escaping from the container in the fridge. The wife was NOT amused to say the least. So now no more nightcrawlers in there.

If it’s braid I will leave it until it has been cut down to a length that is not smart to fish with. This will take years. Often times I will take braid off and put it back on the spool because I know it’s still good line. Another thing with braid is you can reverse it meaning put the line that was on the bottom on the top and it’s like you have a fresh out of the box spool.

For mono I will only keep it for a few months and then toss it if I’m changing line on that reel. It’s so cheap and takes less line to fill up a spool so I don’t have a issue trashing it and putting fresh on

If you think you will make or even save money from tying flies I'm sad to disappoint you both.
You will, almost no matter how many flies you tie, end up spending more in materials than if you had just bought the flies directly.
That being said, it is damn fun to fiddle with making your own gear and the satisfaction you get from catching something on your own creation beats even the biggest fish on 'commercial' lures.
Think of it as a hobby within the hobby rather than a way to save/make money and you will be much, much happier.

I use that paired with a Daiwa Sealine SL50SH. I paid $120 or so when I got like 5 years ago, but you can pick them up used for $80.00 or less here and there. You can deal with sharks up to around 5 feet in the surf, jack crevalle, etc and it's also a killer reel for jigging if you're on a boat. If you're going the be in the salt don't scrimp on reels, the ocean is hard on everything .

Unless you're in a part of the world that's not currently in winter, wait until between march and may for spawning season. Also, we'll need to know what kind of fish you want to catch. I've got an old dagger sit-in. I drilled out some holes in the seat pillars to zip tie some pvc for a rod holder, and just got a 3 lb anchor kit and a screw in cleat from bps as well. I want a sit on top or even a pedal drive but they're expensive and rather heavy. This guy is selling the most disgustingly pimp kayak i've ever seen, its got a trolling motor set up with the throttle next to the seat, vertical and horizontal rod holders, fishfinders and all. Found a pretty interesting way to fish a crankbait the other day. I'm calling the method "Deadstick Cranking".

If you've ever seen those Live Target Sunfish baits (pic related), you fish it in a similar fashion. Cast the crank, let it float, and give it a small jerk every couple of seconds, then let it float back up.

What this does is, puts leverage on the bill so it dives down just a few inches and then comes to a floating stop on the surface. This mimics a dying fish very well and I nailed a few top water bass on it last weekend.

the reel is just to store line, get a cheap click and pawl and when it breaks upgrade. learn to cast on something half decent, i'd reccomend a cabelas cgr, it's hard to make glass -not- work and it's hard to break glass.

regardless of what the pattern has been made with, it's still a "dive down a few inches to a few feet, float back to the surface, pause" retrieve
the fly lands softer
though the splash of the crank may draw attention
the crank probably rattles, while the fly makes a gentle "bloop" with a bubble trail
the crank can probably go deeper, too, though a diver can get surprisingly deep, especially with a super slow sink tip.
they're not the same lure, but they're the same basic presentation, in the same way the live target sunfish and hollow frogs are fished in the same way.
it's not my fault you dont know that two different lures can be fished the same way

Going surf fishing for the first time in Costa Rica next week. Ordered an 8 foot rod to go with the cheapo shimano reel and 30 pound braid I run in lakes here, so light for sea tackle.

Bucktail with a berkely gulp swimming mullet as a trailer (both jig and plastic in white, or combo of red/white) is a really solid lure.
You may want to consider weedless options for fishing rocks or other heavy cover. (for example, a texas rigged swimbait) Also, topwater lures like spooks will get bit in the surf.
If you're only fishing from the beach, your spoons should serve you well. Don't be afraid to use bait, too. Should be able to dig up sand fleas of some kind, or find crabs, or cut up something you catch.

Took my swedish pimple and panfish magnets to my local lake today. I got the idea to rig my jig like this (pic) after I saw the Hali Sukkula jig, which has the hook hanging like that with a chain. I have no idea what the effect is, or how useful, but I kinda like it. Seems like it would be easier for a bluegill to inhale bait on the hook in this configuration. Also like that I won't lose the lure if the hook snags.

I did not catch any fish today, no bites or any sign of life. Can't speak to the effectiveness. I thought I'd have some luck with jigging and float techniques, but nothing.

Another new thing I tried today was putting an inline fishing reel on my 9 ft spinning rod. It's basically just there to hold line, didn't "cast" at all. Honestly, I enjoyed just walking around the lake just jigging or flipping a float. I would like to try the same but with a 12+ ft rod. The simplicity of pole fishing with the utility/flexibility of a variable length line.

we're not talking about flyfishing for trophy carp, tarpon, steelhead/salmon, we're talking about baby's first 5 weight learn to cast.
once he can cast and hard fighting quarry becomes a target then absolutely go for a good reel, but for learning how to cast, and catching bass, panfish, normal size trout, and similar, the reel is just a convenient place to put line you're not casting at the moment.

Youtube is your friend for rigging. But I'd run the swimbaits on that braid with 30lb fluoro for toothy critters.
Half ounce might be a tad light in windy conditions, bring some 5/8oz and 3/4oz. Depending on surf height and period, you may want even some 1-1.5oz lead, especially if you decide to soak bait.

Yes and no.
Match your setup to your lure.
Trying to throw a 1g lure on a rod rated 25-50g CW and 0.30mm line* will only end end frustration.
Casting that same lure with an UL setup is pure joy though.

To cast that lure on a heavy setup you will need some extra weight. A bombarda/caro float is designed just for that - casting light lures on heavier setups.

*European so talking line in diameter. The lb rating makes no sense to me and I haven't even given a shot at making sense of it.

It's good enough generally.

I love braid because it's limp, doesn't kink, doesn't pigtail, less sees stress means more sensitivity, and it lasts longer, but mono is nice and cheap, easier to tie, less visible, and tangles a little less.

Plus super sensitive line can tell the fish just as much about you as it tells you about the fish, if your rod isn't very sensitive.

Not particularly. Mono is easier to untangle as anon said, plus it's more forgiving because it stretches where braid doesn't. Like many anons, I prefer braid but the benefits are marginal at best given how much more expensive it is.

Rods themselves should be balanced at the pivot, which is typically the reel seat. I dont imagine it would effect the balance much if at all considering how s10 reels are small and pair with their finesse counterparts.
