I dunno about cuttings but i'm not gonna lie i've sometimes picked fruit from arboretum/garden plants when they happen to be ripe

Just don't cut off more than a third of the plant and no one will care, act casual, have a plan, I've harvested hundreds of plants from Winterthur and Longwood and other Dupont robber barons gardens, I always sneak in fuck paying $20 admission and only take one plant per visit so as to be a good steward of the environment. Just cut the slimmest, greenest young shoot you can. Something you could prune with basic scissors or a sharp knife. Have an empty backpack ready to put it in and gtfo.

A Macedonian bloke I used to know would go to the gardening show every year in a great big coat with secareurs up his sleeve and steal all the new varieties of fruit tree that were displayed. I went round his place once and he had the most amazing suburban orchard with trees grafted to so many varieties he couldnt remember what they were.

Said every year he would see another guy doing the same thing and they would nod but never speak to each other.
