Leeches are used medically, but it's very rare and there are plenty of different more modern methods for achieving the same result. They're a specific breed of leech as well AFAIK.

They’re only used because they have blood-thinning properties secreted from their mouths and thus by placing them into a specific spot they can help heal someone if they have a specific problem, but those leeches are also bred and kept in an environment where they can’t get diseases, a wild leech could potentially infect you with something. Typically they don’t though, the wound is more at risk for a regular infection than some leech-disease.

Leeches never were used for blood draining, you moron. They were always used for the exact same thing - apply to burned or frost-bitten area and create artificial bloodflow through it to prevent amputation and/or rot. Also applied to infected areas as last resort to clean the puss from it.
