If you use cotton duck you will need an industrial sewing machine.
If you use a home sewing machine- use nylon or something thin.
You can get a flame resistant fabric for the chimney area- looks like tin foil. I've used it for welding robot covers.
When sparks land on nylon it will melt right through it.
Cotton duck will leak unless you treat it with a water sealer- Flammability concerns.
I suggest using blue tarp material to prove out your design then replace it with canvas.
Canvas painting tarps from home depot are my go to cheap canvas source for projects but they will need to be water proof treated.
Marine canvas is way too expensive.
I would probably use dacron sail cloth but have not researched/tested embers melting through.
My main concern is with sparks/embers from the wood burner melting through the fabric and flammability issues.
