Assuming you have 2-3 weeks to visit the Alps and you want to hike, bum around (without all the begging part), sleep rough, camp or stay at a hostel for a couple nights a week, what would be the best place to start? Seeing the major mountains would be nice but it's not obligatory. Have in account it would need to have decent access to public transportation because driving there is not an option.
