Anyone here ever /out/ with a horse? What was the experience really like? Any advantages or disadvantages to having one or more traverse the landscape with you?

If you enjoy horse riding, are actually decent at it, and you’re in shape for it, you can’t go wrong on going /out/ with your horse. You could also just use one for packing, which requires way less know how than riding but still takes some specialized skills.

I’d lay down how to do it all yourself as usual, but it generally doesn’t seem very appreciated, so I’ll just recommend you find an outfiting business with horses and see if they don’t have a packing/camping trip they sell.

Yeah, more of a hobby but no better way to see the world. Disadvantages include cost/getting spooked by general vibe or pic related so you have to really be in to it. I've always liked getting a miniature for carrying gear around.

Im curious to find out what's the best way to pack a horse for camping/hunting, weather using a backpack is viable or is better to just get a set of really good saddlebags

This is supposedly dangerous but it doesn’t take a lot of thought to figure out why. Might not be the same with hornless saddles, though. Saddlebags are good, but you could also just get a pack saddle if you’re not riding or even for your second horse.

Yeah now that I think about that the backpack would be pretty dangerous. I definitely want to actually ride the horse. I knew a guy from Alberta who used to hunt in the Rockies with horses and that sounded really appealing to me.

If you like animals and can ride it could be very satisfying. I didn't have a good skill but I was in group, if you want to go you should have some solid experience.

You could also just get a saddle without a horn. The horn on a western saddle’s only purpose is to dally a rope, really. It’s not a handhold. If you don’t rope, you don’t need a saddle with a horn. I would recommend some cavalry type saddle, maybe Australian, if you can find it in your seat size and it fits the horse’s back. Better too big than too little, you can just put a thicker pad on the horse’s back for a bigger saddle. Keep it in your tent so that the seat stays warm and it doesn’t get stolen. Cold leather is a bitch. And so is losing a goddamned saddle.

Varies based on your budget; you can spend thousands on a saddle if you want to. You can get a decent trail/endurance saddle starting at $500 new, but depending on your area, you can usually find used ones on Craigslist for half that.

If you are deadset on riding the horse Id recommend getting a pack mule to carry gear. Make sure if you get one the horse is in decent shape for trail work or climbing mountains, if they arent theyll be just as fucked as some fat guy trying to hike for the first time

I've been on a few pack trips. Its basically great- they carry more and go farther than you can on foot. You need to be comfortable in the saddle and have recent experience. You cant just jump in the saddle - ride all day and expect to walk the next day much less get back in the saddle.

That being said they are more work and less stealthy than being on your own- and shit can go sideways- lose one or it gets injured etc...We had one break a leg and had to put it down on the spot. Left it for the griz.

I don't post here often, but hey, horse thread on /out/. Thanks OP.
I own few horses and with gf we do long trips across country every summer. We did about 400 km in 5+3 days last year. As long as you ride near water sources and over grassy fields, there is not much you can mess up if you know your horse well.
Pic related is my small Carpathian horse having a rest near a parking area.

Haven't gone camping with horses, but have gone on many rides with friends and with a co worker who owns horses. But I will say this; I love it and hope to own my own horses and a small farm at some point.

It is very fun, but yes, there is alot of $ in the hobby. And part of what makes it fun is the danger. You could fall off, get bucked off, horse slips and fall, getting kicked by a poorly trained horse, etc. I love it. I love the culture of it as well.

My buddie was a wrangler out west and did guided rides in a nat. park. He never was injured but there were a couple people who were. Don't be afraid to try it. There are alot more dangerous activities than riding.

That being said I think it's normal to be nervous around any animal that has +500 lbs on you, and they will spook / kick / haul ass and drag you if something really scares them.
