If you have a decent amount of fenced land they'll find bugs and shit to eat to reduce the amount of feed. Plus you can grow food for them.

Maybe don't look at it as a way to make money but as a way to eat food without poison in it.
If you're so inclined you could also watch a bunch of vids about the factory farming of chickens and feel good about the life you're giving yours.

They're probably fine. The IRS doesn't care about money you make from a hobby unless it's consistent. You have to pass the business test which means you have to make money 3 years out of any 5. But you can write off the cost of everything including stuff like electricity, and the mortgage interest or rent on the land you use, and water, and perhaps even a home office to run your egg business. So you're almost guaranteed to actually be losing money selling eggs and the IRS doesn't allow you to write off hobbies that lose money. So it's not really a thing for most people. Unless you actually make your living farming it's probably not a business. Even if you do make your living farming you're probably losing money once the cost of the land is calculated.

Don't know what "organic" means in the us, but here in Europe store bought eggs are good quality and yet I assure you that "home grown" eggs are so much better tasting they're barely the same food
when I get real eggs from my grandma I use them sparingly beacuse they're a treat

I guess what most people here don't get is that if you don't have neighbours to barter their produce with you, you can forget about small farming. and even with that you're broke all the time

also $2 for 32 eggs is atleast twice as cheap as I get in eastern Europe and it's honestly insane

Regardless of bartering with family and acquaintances being a positive thing, farming as a means of achieving a certain level of self-sufficiency will help you save money in the long run. It doesn't have to be your primary means of income but just a secondary activity for personal supply.

They are something a chiken produces in variable quantities throughout the laying year. A chicken in molt does not lay eggs. A chicken can molt for more than a month. Leading up to and after, chickens lay less regularly then one ever other day or so. So, the sales of eggs is first dependant upon the phase of the chicken. Egg production is also dependant upon the quality and ammount of feed. Lastly, all chickens reach a point where they lay no more. At that point, they are one tough bird. Dog food in reality. Chickens for eggs for fiat monies is not a cakewalk.

Or...just let the chickens run around the yard. Hispanics and country blacks call them "yard bird" for a reason. They'll eat all the bugs that you don't want, as well. So, barring losing a chicken to disease, a predator, or a vehicle, your total lifetime cost of ownership is only what you paid for the chick and to build the coop. Some breeds do better at staying alive than others.

An egg every other day (a generous estimate, though) for three years is 548 eggs, about 46 cartons. You should also check the prices of under-the-table eggs again because you can easily get $5/dozen. If you go legit and have a good market (ie. selling to yuppies at a farmers' market) you can charge $8/dozen, if you "wholesale" to a local market you can get about what you would under the table on a reliable basis and if your birds somehow produce especially pretty, large and/or tasty eggs then $1/ea. or better isn't out of the question if you live near a large city.
