Gonna start going on daytime hikes to get out of the house, I've got a backpack and some gear already but I'm new to this and not sure what to take? I'm planning for these to be day-long hikes, leaving in the AM and returning after dark. What kinda gear do you recommend? I've currently got:
>folding shovel
>knoife with flint and steel
>stove with alcohol in case I decide to bring something worth cooking
>nuts
>binoculars
>flashlight and backup flashlight

Anything else you recommend?

Why?

Bics do the job better and easier

A headlamp is much nicer than a flashlight for hiking in the dark

Also I'd suggest a first aid kit, emergency blanket and whistle

It sounds dumb but it feels safer than a knife for me so I like to have one with me when I go out even if i also have a knife. I have two in my car right now. It's a personal thing more than a real utility

Right i forgot to include that. The flint and steel came with the knife, they have pockets in the sheath.

Ok on both accounts assuming the flint and steel is to develop your skills. If not get a bic.

Personally I like an headlamp better but the rest is fine.
Get some maps on your phone, carry plenty of water or if there's water around and you don't want to be bothered with weight then a small filter or water tablets are ok to have.
If you're going solo tell someone the general location you plan to hike. Happy trails, fren.

You should pick up a Max Axe. It'd fit in perfectly with your gear list, and you'd be able to drop the weight of your shovel

That axe looks to be $250 for a lot of stuff I dont need though. I've had the shovel for years, at this point it's a security item more than anything

If you're planning on staying /out/ after dark just make sure you've got everything you need in case you get stuck or lost and need to spend the night innawoods. Some kind of basic shelter (space blanket, emergency bivvy), some extra food for breakfast, dry change of socks, and an extra insulating layer like a fleece or a flannel.

Since you didn’t give us your climate, I’ll assume it’s somewhat warm... so some snacks, a few liters of water, maybe some rain gear, a pocketknife, a bic lighter, a cell phone. Literally nothing else.

I mean it's unlikely you'll die without any of that, unless you're in an extreme weather situation, but dry socks and a few extra snacks can make an unplanned overnighter a little more comfy.

If it truly is your first time, limit your hikes to trails that have cell reception. After a few times out you'll figure out what gear you need and can venture out more. As a aside, there is cell reception at the summit of Everest so this isn't limiting you too much.
