What is the absolute most warm tent I could purchase for under $500?
I can never stay fucking warm when sleeping in a tent despite multiple layers and a nice sleeping bag. Going to try getting a more insulated tent next. Any rec's?

tent makes a nominal difference in warmth. key equipment is sleeping bag and sleeping pad. if you're cold one of those two items is the problem.

It's probably your ground cover, since your body weight crushes the sleeping bag below you, or you're overdoing it, sweating, then the sweat chills. That's the problem I almost always have when I'm too cold.

Like the guy above said the tent does not provide warmth. It provides surrounding weather cover while still being ventilated. Without the ventilation you could keep heat but also your breath would condense rapidly and you would soak over the course of the night, bringing you right back to freezing.

A tent isn't much for keeping warm. It only keeps a bit of warmed air around you, but the main purpose is to keep you dry. Rely on your sleeping kit to keep you warm or get a tent stove.

The more mesh and separation between inner tent and fly shell, the more cold air will move through it. Also, thicker walls will hold more warm air in. I live in a tent and during Winter I get garbage bags opened and fluffed, and stuff them all up into the openings between tent/fly or anywhere that air easily moves through. Just cutting out the cold breeze makes a worthwhile difference. If there are less "meshy' tents, I'd guess those to be a good start on looking for inherently warmer ones, and those with thicker walls. Your two primary forces at work there are keeping breezes out, and heat in. I don't know any particular ones, but when you shop around, look closely at the construction details and how they should work regarding those two factors. But yes, primary will be bag and pad.

Don't use a three-season tent for four-season activities. Mast of your warmth will come from your Sleeping bag/Air Mattress. Air Mattress will provide R-Value, giving you coverage from the coldness on the ground, sleeping bag will give you warmth. If you are still getting cold, then consider getting a warmer bag, or look at your conditions - is your bag down? Stuffing your 3 season tent so it can't breathe will cause condensation build up in your tent, getting moisture in your bag and causing the down in the bag to stop functioning for warmth. Change to synthetic or Hydrophobic down. This is also the case if you camp in a particularly damp areas. Even during winter.

Your tent is only there to protect you from wind and rain, it has effectively no insulation properties. You need a proper sleeping pad to insulate you from the cold ground. A thermarest foam pad is $20.

Just get the thermarest xtherm pad, I was toasty with that, a benie and a -5C° sleepingbag in -10C°. What you sleep on makes the most difference

one thing you can try that hasn’t already been covered is doing cardio so your body can regulate itself better, that should make it easier to keep your extremities warm when lying still

don’t get in your bag with cold hands/feet either, do some jumping jacks or run on the spot or some shit before you get in
