Like the other anon said. This is a specific type of finish that is left on the knife intentionally. Some people really like this sort of look, myself included. Hand forged and/or aged with a gray vinigar patina is god tier

I bought a couple old hickory knives off eBay, one brand new and the other is a used "vintage" one. The top knife is the new one, it came with a fuck ton of burrs in the handle so I sanded it and sealed it with beeswax. I also soaked it in apple vinegar for an hour to put a decent patina on it.

I still need to sharpen the new one, but the vintage one has a beautiful edge on it. I used it for a some bark removal already, they're both pretty nice.

Chopping is a vastly under-recognized thing when /out/, as you often need to clear brush and small branches for paths if you aren't a trail fag.

A larger knife works about as well as a machete too due to the thicker stock, even if they're usually shorter.

I duct-tape the handles on my Old Hicks used for /out/ stuff. Keeps the tang dry and makes for a better grip if you use uneven wraps.

I use the 7" butchers mostly.

They appear to be OH 7" butcher knives, which work very well for /out/.

They're 1095 with a low rockwell (well, it's kinda a wide band they list and would no doubt vary largely, but they're less than 58, so strong).

They're one of my favorite /out/ knives and are better than a Mora.

Yeah, they've constantly been making them thinner to keep the price around the same. It doesn't really matter for practical purposes, as low rockwell 1095 isn't prone to snapping with lateral loading.

The lack of a sheath is its downside, but you can find relatively cheap leather ones that fit online easily enough.

They're great for chopping live wood, and you can shave wood for fires as good as anything out there.

Has a guard, and has stood the test of time to be a relatively tough blade for most tasks, especially poking and prying open shit. Cheap too in most places, i.e., 50-80 buckaroos depending on where you live.

You want a guard if you need stabby stabby.

Stick tang doesn't matter, unless you baton on the handle. If you baton on the blade, it won't bend. Rarely, would it break, as it has a pretty good shock absorbing grip.

You can hammer with the pommel.

58 rockwell is ok for 1095 (the CV doesn't add much at all); it'll usually bend at that rockwell. They won't be brittle on the edge unless it's overheated, which sharpening will fix.

The dude asked for killing shit, and they've been killing shit fine for a long time as the guard + 7" blade is great for the task, as is the clip point.

I don't see the knife lasting long if you do that. It's held on with a single pin. One good snap, the pin breaks, and then you have the pommel gone and leather rings scattered everywhere.

Really, that noted, even if I wanted a KA-BAR, sadly what may be the best version of the USMC KA-BAR is made by Cold Steel out of a factory in Taiwan. Their Leatherneck SF offers the advantage of a full wide tang and all that jazz. Grippy grip, full tang, D2 steel. Not sure if D2 is any good, but the other features are attractive.

Well there's your problem. I take I your looking for something more traditionally styled? What kind of grind are you looking for? Will it be mainly for wood? food? skinning? Just general stuff?
When you say bushcraft I'm guessing your focussing more on carving wood? Feather sticks. Notches. That stuff?

Any of the expensive "bushcraft" knives from the big name companies will fit your bill.

Benchmade Bushcrafter, for example. The S30V is stainless, so it'll last forever outside of a salt water environment as long as you dry it off after fresh water use.

Fallkniven are alright; F1, A1, S1, though they're rubber gripped

Ontario makes some more expensive fixed knives in D2 (quasi-stainless) that they call "heirloom" pieces (that's the name of them too)

Spyderco has their own Bushcraft, but it's in 52100 (good steel, but not stainless); the Temperance 2 is a nice piece too and in VG-10 (stainless)

You can baton with both. Clip point is probably stronger as the top-edge won't adsorb as much force as the normal spine of a tanto (unless it's completely flat, but most aren't), so the shock won't be as hard on the blade.

Clip point is better for cleaning animals by a large margin.

Honestly there’s not a lot of knives that fit your description. The Izula, the Enzo Necker, some of the Solingen made Linder Scout knives come to mind, but not a lot of other knives, sorry.

5 years, you could've put it in a ponytail and then cut right above the binder cleanly. I recently cut my hair after a similar amount of time. Went into a proper place, but they did it for free since I said I was thinking of donating it. They put it into two pigtails and cut them off, then did a bit of clean up after that. I really like the AA forge knives, the handles are the most comfortable I've used. The Nomad and WoodsMaster are very new and haven't seen much use yet. The Bushcrafter is my primary camp knife and has seen a ton of use.
The swamprat is tough as hell and my favorite mid-sized knife for doing stupid things like batoning if I don't have an axe.

It only matters if you baton on the handle and not the blade. The join where the tang meets the grip can bend.

You shouldn't be batonning with a knife anyway, as every one of them has a breaking point. A Becker BK2 (one of the thickest knives around) will eventually break, and it's why the warranty says don't do it and they won't replace it from such.

Rat 7 is decently priced for what it is, and that style of blade is what I consider a "camp knife".

Flat ground for ease of slicing. Blade big enough to chop branches with and to clear brush. You can make kindling with it.

I always strip the coating and replace the handles with micarta handles I make at home (easy and cheap) Also very easy to make a kydex sheath too (only cheap after you buy every thing, can still buy premade for 50 bucks). I prefer them over my Esee's, Bark river's, fallkniven. If the handles are to slick for you, you dont want to make, buy new ones, stipple it or put skateboard tape over it.

Hudson bay knives are by default meat cleavers because thats what the trappers had at hand and decided to take then into the wilderness. Neither dis they have much higher quality steel than the rust prone and soft (but nevertheless reliable and abundant) 1075. Also, can confirm that the Condors have top notch leather sheaths.

I wrapped the blade in a piece of cardboard. the saw was somewhat unstable and wobbly. on the other hand, the frame was more stable than expected. it was a one-time try. nothing beats a good folding saw.

AUS-8 is unironically better than almost all super steels outside of 3V (expensive) for a knife designed for impacts and strength. AUS-6 would be even better.

It can be better depending on what you want. For /out/ stuff taking an edge faster is sometime more important, which is why a lot of companies use 1095 or similar. Impact so a factor also and many high end steel are mroe fragile.

any wide-bladed knife with a guard. It doesn't have to be sharp, just pointy enough to pierce into the ribcage and wide enough to make the lung collapse. A cheap five buck machete will work. A more highend option would be a hunters knife for taking down boars. They can be found for around 20 bucks.
Thin blades like the Mora or the Ka-Bar are pretty much useless unless you're skilled enough to pierce the eye or he atlas (both targets about the size of a thumb) on an attacking animal. Knifes like that are good for cleanly dispatching wounded animals kept in place with dogs but ineffective for defensive use.

Even if I bought a BK with after market sheath, scales, etc, still cheaper than my bark rivers. Also it being a cheaper means I'm not afraid to use and break it. Unless you're cutting through heaps of abrasive materials (wood isn't that), you won't need to sharpen it for a long time.

You'll lose the razor edge, but the working edge will be good for years if all you do is use it on wood and food (most /out/ things there).

This will give you more than enough time to research how to sharpen it.

I’m really liking it for now. The handle is this weird grippy plastic, kinda feels like holding a rubber mallet.

The steel itself is not that polished, but the secondary bevel keeps it razor sharp.

It’s kinda heavy, bute I’ve held heavier knives and this one definitely falls under the heavier light knives.

I think this shit’s gonna last a long long time

I have basically the same knife, except it was made for Bahco by Morakniv, it came in a set with a folding saw. I use both all the time while /out/ even battoning with it until I got my hatchet. Great knife, very well made. Fuck the memes

They test knives. On film. Usually beyond what the knife tested will be required to do. While you may not like who they are and how they act, their opinion is a lot more likely to lead to a quality knife choice than that of some asshole who has been glamping off camera larping bushcraft on who has not so slowly gotten fatter while shilling "his" knife pattern for hundreds of dollars.

Because they offer knives with steels like 440A for 100 bucks and any better steel costs even more. I'd much rather make my knife on my own or buy from a big manufacturer and mod it to my taste. And since I have no equipment for working steel like that I stick to the latter.

You overestimate steels, dude. Supersteels are just marketing trick to make you pay shittons. They also are pain in ass when time to sharpen. Good knifemajers can achive good chars with aberage steels with proper heattreat, you wll get sturdy easy to hone edge.
