I just bought a skillet, how do you clean it and care for it when you go /out/ (and at home)?
I know it's not a good looking Lodge, but in Italy they are expensive and I don't have that kind of money. Pic related, also best coffee maker for the outdoors.

keep cooking oil handy
after cooking scrape the pan and rinse it(NO SOAP!)
dry thoroughly
wipe down all exposed iron heavily with the oil to create a barrier against oxidization
repeat cleaning process after EVERY use and re-oil every 2 weeks it's stored without use

OP says it's cast iron and that's how you deal with cast iron
hard to tell from the pick but it may not be coated and instead just factory new and never used
or that may be a stock photo of a pan

If its cast iron keep it hot and set your sink to squirt hot water then stick the skillet under the water pour it out and scrape it clean. After you've scraped all the residue off the skillet then take some bacon grease on a rag and wipe it down

it's harder and it doesn't really need a mirror smooth surface because you always use oil
also the rock should be pretty smooth like a skipping stone you'd find in the river

Clean after use? Put it back on the heat. Once it's hot, add a little water - you want the water to hiss and boil quickly, not soak - and scrape it out with your spatula. Use a metal spatula. You'll melt a plastic one. Once you've steam cleaned it with your exploding steam bubbles, pour the water out, repeat if needed, then wipe it dry and coat it with a little oil.

Dont use soap.

Here's how I typically clean mine. I put it back on the heat just a little bit to warm the oil and gunk on the pan.
Then I use a GSI pot scraper and scrape off all the gunk into the bin.
Then I put some new fat into the pan, warm it a little bit and coat the bottom.
I may take some paper towel and rub the fat all over the pan.
Very rarely do I use water at all. If there's a real horror show of crap stuck to the pan I might boil some water in the pan.

yup this works, though in my experience it's not hard to get down to bare iron if you do it too often. i generally save the extensive scraping (with plastic scraper) for when the pan is cool.
i think water would be in the situations when the cooking has been done a bit wrong (as far as cast iron cooking goes)

It does yes, causes it to flake off. Same applies to non-stick pans too, causes the non-stick to wash off over time.

Basically, never use any soaps on any pans, and only use abrasion when truly called for, but lightly. Doing this makes pans last decades rather than years.

Cast iron has better distribution of heat, better retention of heat, stuff doesn't stick to it as much because of fat polymerization on the surface.
I also like the idea I can slam it in my roommates head when they don't fucking shut up while I'm trying to prepare my dinner.

So it has an enameled interior--not seasoned iron. The surface should basically last forever with careful use (no metal utensils, no extreme heat changes or impacts). I've seen these before and was just as confused about whether they were really cast iron. It's basically a way to get the heat retention of iron without any of worry on which recipes are acceptable or how to wash it.

not to worry friend - cast iron always gets some rust in storage and between use. rust is nothing! if you want to polish it back up (not even really necessary †bh) you douse it in some veggie oil and sprinkle it with salt and scrub with a cloth until the rust is gone. then you simply oil and season as normal and you're back to good. you can do this as many times as you want and the cookware will be good for decades. don't stress over rust at all.

This is the way I do it. It will make your skillet non-stick after a few uses, shiny and black.
If it's a rough surface, expect some carbon to remain on the surface of the pan.

Nah, water when poured on a very hot surface instantly evaporates creating a layer of "insulating" steam (look for Leidenfrost effect).
As long as it's not too much the pan won't suffer
