Post your long distance hike experience, gear, and plans

In May I'm going to tackle a section of the New England Trail for the week I get off work for the year. By 2021 I plan to hit the PCT and from there who knows.

starting the PCT on April 14th, first through hike

I have most of my gear together now, just missing a few things.

>ULA circuit
>EE Revelation
>MSR pocket rocket and a small 750ml pot

Only thing i have left to pick up are a sleeping pad and some 'hiking clothes' any recommendations?

For cloths a lot of people rec running shorts and a tshirt, I wear long sleeves and pants for the sun protection which you might want for Kennedy meadows. Prana stretch zones are my go to and Columbia makes good hiking shirts

For pads I use a thermarest xlite which is great but I've heard good things about gossamer gear closed cell pads

Very first-rimer, middle road gear list.

Clothing is a system you'll have to figure out--but accepting now that starting choices don't need to be permanent will help.

Avoid all polyester. Nylon or wool, all the way. Huge giveaway tip there.

Ummm...plan your hiking outfit around the heat--Breathable--knowing you'll add a layer if cold. Stay synthetic for the first 900 and last 300 miles....go cotton in the middle.

Yogi has a few good tips but do not follow her nutrition advice or her OCD footcare.

Only mail food boxes to three places, and do this from towns on the trail, buy as you go for the rest.....it's not Africa.

Ummm...one pair of nylon underwear is good. A buff is about the most useful item per weight. Do not bring an autistic knife.

I've thru hiked:

>jordan trail - 400 miles - 16 days
My kit for 3 season thru hiking weighs in at ~6lb. Pretty basic but here's my main items:

>30f quilt
>~35L pack
I've got 4 months now to earn some more money before heading back to the states to start a SOBO hike of the PCT and if things work out I'll hopefully hike the AZT or something in that region after.

If you can sleep on one ccf mats are ideal for thru hiking as they are cheap and indestructible. You'll have to do some test hikes to work out what sort clothing system will suit you for you active layer. For the PCT I'm going to be wearing a thin, hooded, grid fleece with a synthetic long sleeve shirt over the top. Lined shorts. darn tough socks. trail runners. That'll suit me for most of the time.

Columbia often have their omni shade shirts on sale, they're really cool and you can roll up the sleeves easily. Had one of them in the cascades last summer when it was hot as hell and it was really comfy.

only if you're spending ~$100 on one. Even the top of the line ones, I'm mainly thinking about the neoair, are prone to all sorts of issues. CCF mats are just so cheap and indestructable, it makes them really suitable for long distance hiking as they aren't going to fail on you. Things like the z-lite, gossamer gear nightlight, etc are surprisingly comfortable and easy to get used to. If you cut them down to torso length they weight like ~100g which is pretty hard to beat.

Unless there's something forcing you not to take this approach this is what most SOBOs will be doing, including myself. I'll be in Seattle for the 28th of June, then hiking around lower elevation untill the coniditions look right. Untill then I'm running and hiking to keep myself in shape. Need to be hitting those big miles asap to get ahead of the fires and to the Seirras before the snow.

You can keep the stink down a bit by just washing your pits and groin with a bandana or towel. These days I carry a small bottle with peppermint Dr. Bs soap in it. I put a drop or two of that on my small piece of towel, dampen it a bit then just give myself a rub down.

As the AT doesn't really have a real weather window you take it real slow to start with. This way you don't really need to be in shape. Just take it easy and listen to your body, you've got plenty of time to be pushig big miles.

I just moved to south-east Wisconsin, and am dying for a decent wilderness loop I can do in 2 days/1 night with some friends. I used to do sections of the Pemigewassett when I lived in New Hampshire on the weekends.

easy. as long as you don't mind relying on small shops and aren't wanting a super specific diet. I ended up going no cook by the end of the hike as I was mostly eating cake, fruit, bread, cheese, meat, pate, biscuit, chocolate. fun fact, the gr11 was the hike that taught me not to stress about packing out fresh fruit and veg. I had peaces and tomatoes packed loose in my bag a number of times with no problem. I never carried more than 3 days of food on the GR11

Also I've heard there's a good one in Nepal (three passes or something like that?) And theres the Great Divide Trail going through the Rockies in Canada

Good luck. Don't be discouraged by the difficulty thru New Jersey. ~10 miles is an alright day because some of the trail is utterly fucked. First 500 miles are by far the most slow-going.

Bring a headnet for bugs, it will save you from endless amount of frustration in heavy Gnat/Chigger/Blackfly/'the fucking divebombing assholes' areas, also for late evening/early morning walking when the spiders decide to web up the trail. Another thing is if you EVER expect to nighthike, get a BRIGHT, WATERPROOF headlamp. Anything <$50 won't cut it, IPX-7 waterproofing or bare minimum IPX-6 if you don't want it to fail in fog/rain/humidity. Have never been more terrified or frustrated in my life than when my cheap Petzl gave out one night, then again when my slightly better Black Diamond gave out. Found out strapping my phone to my forehead made an infinitely better light than either of those did. Again, good luck! Something like half of hikers quit in the first quarter of the trail, so hang in there.

Anyone have tips for keeping yourself in it mentally. I tried doing a section hike of the AT and pussied out within the first day. Not sure what specifically wigged me out but I think the combination of being soaked, tired, hungry, and it being my first time all played a part to push me over. How can I stop being a pussy about it because I would love to do it all the way but I don't want to pussy out. I also felt like I need a partner maybe to keep myself in it but I don't have any friends that would like to do it with me.

I've never believed this. It seems to be what people who don't actually enjoy long distance hiking say to themselves.
If you struggled on day one then maybe spend more time.hiking shorter distances before trying the thru.

Like you said it was your first time and your lack of experience showed making your experience tough. Go on bunch of over nighters. Learn how to stay dry, how to feed yourself, and how to pace yourself.
The truth is a lot of people I met on the AT loved the _idea_ of thru hiking. But in reality didn't enjoy what thru hiking actually involves.
Once you have experience and know you enjoy hiking long distances the mental challenge is almost nonexistent.

On a proper thru-hike being able to go farther and farther each day was cool. Day one was 12 miles then barely moving day two, but by day fourteen getting a 20 mile day in was a good goal. By month two, up to 30 mile days, month three able to jog all day and get to camp early.

Hiking is a very self-monitored activity though, maybe sticking with a group makes it easier on you, but many times if 1 person in the group gave up, the rest followed in the coming days. My thoughts are if you rely 100% on having people you know around or you can't do it, hiking isn't your thing. There are plenty of people to meet on the trail, try to and don't give up because you're lonely a few days.

If you're really determined to go, then go. But it's not for everyone.

Which thread? Just hiked a few sections, but had to quit the first stretch we hit - Wadi Rum to Petra - because I broke a rib 4 days before the start. Hiked Petra to Dana, really worthwhile, pic related.

You'll see a lot of eye's looking at you, they're only Deer. Deer (in the dark) have clear white eyes, and may move up and down to get a look at you, nothing to worry about. Bears will be moving more, and have brownish eyes, but they have good hearing, so if playing some music or talking with yourself they leave before you can see them. If you see Blue or Green-ish eyes, especially up in trees, it could be a mountain lion and you're in trouble, or like a marmot or something which I've seen around.

Always recommend a really goddamn bright headlamp, or even a good flashlight.

Try to focus on the trail instead of your surroundings. If you notice yourself looking side to side rapidly feeling real spooked, gotta stop walking and get yourself together. 99.9% of the time the creature moving about, or the snapping noise you heard is a squirrel.

Reserve one of the shelters in south or north Kettle Moraine. You don't have to sleep in them but it's a nice option if you are with a large group of people. They fill up quick in the warm summer months and right now a few people use them on the weekends (I went three weeks ago). You can't disperse camp in south Kettle Moraine but you can in certain areas of North Kettle Moraine. They are both nice and I wouldn't really say one is better than the other but they are different, which is really cool. You can get some prairie and savannah in the south and more mixed hard/softwood in the north. If you go up to the northwestern section of the trail you will get a lot more kettle lakes and wetlands which can be extremely cool.

The trail is being created by linking public lands and land that has been donated for the trail. As a result, there is even road walking at many sections along the trail (but not in Kettle Moraine). It gets memed a lot but froggs toggs are great. I have just started using the Helium II as my jacket for not-super-wet areas and desu think I prefer my old froggs toggs. However, if you do want to buy a fancy one check out Montbell's Versalite. It looks like the perfect rain jacket IMO. I wish I had been more patient and got one over my helium, it'll do but the hood is shit and pertex shield isn't a get material.

You're not going to mind smelling. You won't smell yourself and when you sweat it will be evaporating and keeping you cool (unless you're wearing the wearing the wrong clothes ie cotton). It's not like when you're playing a sport or at the gym and you're sweat just lingers and drowns you.
At first I would bird bath and rinse in streams but it's futile unless you're going into a restaurant, hotel etc. You'll take a bird bath or shower in a park and the next minute you'll be sweating again and getting into your dirty sleeping bag. You only feel gross after you get clean. If you just get gross and stay gross, the oils on your skin and hair either stop bothering you or aren't as intense. I could never figure out which. Personally, I never felt like I smelled as bad after three weeks and no shower in the trail as I do after lifting/playing basketball.

Don't pack baby wipes like the military guys tell you. You're not going to be around a dozen other dudes all carrying 70lbs of gear in clothes that are too warm. The only time you will notice how bad you or other backpackers smell is if you are inside. If you get a hotel, keep your gear in the closet or the bathroom with the fan on.

Are my 18 mile days to start out optimistic for me? I'm in fairly good shape and walk 10k (6.2 miles) to work 3 days a week and run 11k once a week comfortably. I've a lot of hiking but around here the trails are fairly shorter, so I don't have much experience with 20 mile-ish days. I can hike 20 kilometers (12 miles) comfortably though so adding another 6 miles to that shouldn't be too hard right?

So i guess my questions are, is starting out with 18 miles a day unrealistic, is my KM entry date unrealistic for the snowpack this year and are any of my projected times for the segments unrealistic?

It's good to have a rough idea, but the key to success on a long trail is to be flexible and have an idea of what you'll do if that mileage isn't working, or what you'll do if you are finding it easy.
Plan you where you main resupplies will be in the tricky areas. Workout where, if any, you'll send resupply boxes. And plan where/when you'll switch gear. Work out what you'll do if you get to the Sierras and the snow is still really high, will you flip? will you wait it out? will you head on? if you do head on what will you do if the conditions are too tough? will you be carrying enough food to turn back? and so on.
Getting too bogged down in daily details is ultimately unhelpfull as things will definetly change once you start hiking.

Gear looks great but i don't see anything about food. You will have no use for the knife, tinder or striker but it's not much weight so doesn't matter if you bring it. The camelback is useful on the AT because some streams are 2+ miles from the shelter so you can fill that once and have water for dinner, to drink and some to share with others. Don't fill it during the day on the AT, there's enough streams during most of the trail that you don't need to carry more than a smart water bottle with water. Only bring one of your smart bottles and replace as needed. Bug spray did literally nothing for me on the AT so I wouldn't bring it, but that's up to you. Don't bring a hoodie, gloves or beanie on a thru hike unless you're are departing very early spring. If you don't bring these things, you'll have enough room for food. You also need a trail guide for the trail you're hiking, use AWOL's for the AT.

I found cooking oatmeal for breakfast to be doable only because I could start boiling water, pack up camp then put in my instant oatmeal and be on my way. However, even oatmeal got old and i just wanted to get walking so fuck oatmeal, I'll eat from my 2lb bag of Sour Patch instead. My experience isn't going to be your experience but hopefully the idea of what i'm saying is understandable.

Some ideas for dinner food:

-Instant Rice

Last piece of advice: get the packets of stuff from fast food restaurants, gas stations that serve food and grocery stores. The things that are in single serving packages that sit out at room temperature.

Things I've got from various places:
-Ketchup+Mustard+Relish
-Mayonnaise (great for extra calories with your tuna and so it's not so damn dry)
-Olive oil
-Hot sauce
-All kinds of salad dressing (ranch is great for tortillas and protein)
-salt and pepper
-peanut butter and jelly
-Honey
-coffee creamers (i used the half n half to fatten up my mashed potatoes)
-horseradish sauce
-buffalo/bbq sauce

I'm sure there's more i'm missing but that's the best i can do for now.

I attempted the AT a few years ago. Started March 21 at Springer and it was a huge crowd. I counted 72 tents day 4 at Low Gap shelter so probably 100+ hikers there.

A group of about 20-30 eventually formed one big hiker trash party. Some dude followed them along in a truck delivering them beer and weed at road crossings daily.

I managed to get ahead of them by Erwin and most of them quit at Damascus after trail days. Ran into a few stragglers later in Pennsylvania in July.

I had a lyme disease scare that set me back a month and wasn't able to finish. Maybe some day.
It was a lot of fun, but I had more money budgeted than most so I could stay in motels whenever I wanted. Also could afford Mountain House for every dinner so no real suffering.

Still spent less than $4000 over 5 months.

My only recommendation would be to give yourself as much time as you possibly can. Pontificating about what will/won't be a feasible pace is pretty much pointless. Injuries, personal emergencies, sickness- there are tons of things which can slow you down, and trying to keep up with such a rigorous schedule will only make things more stressful. Unless you have a real hard deadline on Sept. 1st, set aside another 3-4 week at least.

Starting out with 19 mile days with no experience is definitely not a good idea. If you can comfortably do 12, do 12, then when you can comfortably do more- do more. I know its hard to have faith in the process of getting your trail legs, but it will come with time. Watch "The Whimsical Woman" on YouTube. She started out doing sub 10 mile days, and by Washington, she was crushing 30's.

Without my pack (which weighs 5.5lbs) my base weight is around 11lbs, what pack should I get to accommodate that kind of load? There are a few corners I could cut to actually bring that down to about 9lbs but I haven't gotten over the luxury of the items I'd have to ditch. Currently the whole setup fits in a 35 liter pack with room for maybe 2 or 3 days worth of food

I think they were like $6 they sell them at Walmart. Also liked Backpacker's Pantry they were a little more expensive but had a better variety but you had to get them at an outfitter. My sister would mail them to me every now and then also.

What's the most efficient way to distribute weight using a CCF pad as a frame for a frameless pack: rolling it and placing it inside the pack or affixing a folding pad to the back like the z lite?

When I use my zlite, it's only 6 panels I fold it so I have 3 either side. I don't think using a full length z lite will work well as it will take up so much room in your pack.
Most of the time I just use a 1/8" thick piece of ccf and just fold that up as it's so thin.

John Zahorian. He has some ok videos, his trip to Alaska was cool. The rest is pretty standard ultralight youtube wank. He holds/held the fast known time for the Colardao trail. 10 days. Serious effort. The guy seems a little sad though, think he could be depressed though.

That's the story with most of the gimmicky backpacking food. It's also the reason I can't do more than 2-3 days without something cooking on the stove.

You can get dehydrated onions for cheap. You could also do the fried onions that go on top of green bean casserole.

My frogs toggs lasted 800miles on the AT, grabbed a new jacket from a hiker box because I sat too close to a fire and got some ember holes. Could have patched it with duck tape but there was a brand new jacket in the box. The trousers are crap but if you turn them into a rain skirt they work well.

I did a two week section, started at Mt Massive and ended near Salida, the trail is amazing in the fall. My top 3 spots were Mt Massive, Twin Lakes, and Missouri Basin, which is about 5 miles off trail but I totally recommend it. I ended up spending like 3 days there
