Been on several trips...its an awesome place. One of the few places in lower 48 you can lay in your tent and hear wolves howl. Mosquitoes suck tho- pun intended.

I've paddled the border lakes from South Fowl to Lac la Croix twice. The stretch from Basswood Falls to Bottle Portage is my favorite. I hope to go again sometime soon and walk the Border Route Trail, preferably in late September and alone.

Did the Canadian side in High school. One big lake had 2' waves, 3 of us in a canoe with packs scary as hell. Rest of the rest was cash.

Its extremely overrated, also the mosquitoes are horrendous for so much of the year, the rest of the year its nothing but shitty tundra weather..

been there. go later in the season if you plan to fish. you HAVE to port to get anywhere decent. still fairly safe. it's a drive to get there tho. on the way back there is this amazing pie place that you absolutely HAVE to visit. best pie ever. name is Betty's pies.

thats why I go in late Sept/early Oct...ideally after the first freeze...most if not all the bugs are gone and you can get summer weather...or winter weather too.
