Well if you're in Cali, that's good, best state in all 50.
In Cali, there's Mt.Whitney if you're serious hikers, Death Valley if you want to burn alive, the Mojave desert is beautiful at sunset, Lake Owens is a giant lake bed that's currently being refilled which is cool to see, and running around the Sierra Nevada mountain ranges are some awesome rivers and lakes. Since you're in L.A. the closest lakes I know of are the Pyramid Lakes, but those are shitty and infested with kids and tourists.
If you're looking for some cool lakes around Cali, June Lake is pretty, Convict lake is pretty awesome, especially with the history around it.
Mono lake is a fucking big ass lake in north Cali, it's a salt lake and it's nice to drive around it if you've got a 4x4. And of course, Lake Tahoe, it's a tourist trap, but it's a great place to go. And obviously, all of the mountains that aren't Mt.Whitney. Big Bear, Mammoth, and a fuck ton of other ones that aren't famous line the south west of Cali and the north end of Cali.
And yeah, of course there's all the beach side, but you're from Australia, so that probably wouldn't be too interesting to see.
