Deluxe mac and cheese + one pack of oriental ramen+ one foil pouch (fuck cans) of tuna= god tier casserole. Has carbs, fat, and protein to keep you going.
Instant refried beans can be bought in bulk for next to nothing, pair that with some boil in bag rice, add cheese, and rap that shit in a tortilla. Again, fat, protein, and carbs.
Most "backpacking foods" can also be found in the bulk section of health food stores. Instant soups, granola, natural peanut butter, and all sorts of nuts and trail mixes. Instant "shake and make" pancakes are good also. Add powdered milk to your hot cocoa to up the calories and protein. Do this with oatmeal, granola, etc as well.
I'd recommend the NOLS cookbook for good backpacking recipes.
If you're care camping, horse packing, or canoe camping then there is a whole world of camp cookery opened up with the introduction of cast iron.
