I'm generally wondering. What are some tips for fishing in a river with rapid current while shore fishing with lures? I understand that you want to find current breaks and structure impedes the current but how do I find it from the land without the use of sonar? I'm in desperate need for tips. Do I just wing it until I by pure chance, get a hit in a certain location? I do know several spots for fish on the river near me that produce fish (all catfish in slackish current) but I have no idea what I'm doing in very rapid current with lures.

What’s a better line for a finesse rod (dropshot, ned rig, light plastics mostly), braid or mono? I’ve never tried braid before, but it’s stronger and more sensitive than monofilament; with a fluorocarbon leader is there any downside?

Anywhere you go there's bass, even if bass isn't listed on bulletin at your local lake you still have bass. They are like the rats ponds/lakes. If I'm having no luck fishing anything else I can hit a patch of reeds and hook a bass or two to feel better about myself lol.

I go with 50lb powerpro to 20lb fluoro leader for a lot of fish. Double uni knot, wrap the braid 12 times and the fluoro 7 times. Lubricate knots before pulling tight. I leave a little extra tag ends and lick my finger and thumb to protect from burn while I pinched knot and lines to protect from flame and singe tag ends. Diff size braid, mono, and fluoro all call for a diff amount of wraps. Same when tying a clinch knot to your lure, diff line requires diff ammount of wraps.

Just buy soft plastic worms. I got a box of 400 soft plastic worms, salamanders, and crawfish at a garage sale for 5 dollars. Bass are so retarded I've seen a few naked hooked, and some dude on youtube used soap among other household baits. I personally catch trout with powerbait I find on the shore, I never have to buy powerbait or live bait.

40-50 lb braid to 15-20 fluoro top shot / leader is just really flexible. Enjoy filling the spool up with braid and put enough fluoro to be just over my cast distance. Once it get too short, I change it out. Some set up is all braid with short fluoro leader as well. I typically uses fg knot if the knot have to go through the guides and surgeon knot if the knot doesn’t. I tried uni uni before but the knot was really unreliable for me personally for braid to fluoro/mono.

Tie what works for you. Not everyone can tie good double uni knots. I use about 1ft 1/2 to 2ft leader and change it when it gets too short. I also use double uni knots from 300yrds of 65lb braid to 200yrds of 60lb mono and I've brought that through guides to catch a lot of big sharks, giant rays, bullreds, jacks. I kayak baits about 400 yards out from the beach. I just point my rod when I bring the knot through the guides. I also re-tie my knots after they've been stressed. And when my mono gets rough from rubbing sandbars I change it out. Sometimes I'll flip my braid when I do. My double uni knots are solid.

The point is that some people want a more durable line than others and aren't willing to give that up (especially when fishing very rip rap/snag infested waters). You can easily fish with finesse with a fast action rod and mono. Also, have you lived under a rock all these years? There are several morons who to this day still say that fluorocarbon line is more durable than monofilament line. I will admit that I'd be more willing to use fluoro over braid but that doesn't change my disposition about the matter. I have finesse fished in 30 feet of water while fishing on a jetty on one of the great lakes and I didn't have any problems with it.

Nearly any novice fisherman could place well with the same equipment that the "pros" have. I mean christ, all they need to do is look at their highly advanced fish finder and find a lure that will work to catch them (which they have like 20 or more poles already tied up for). So which is it? I don’t even fish for bass but I understand that bass fishing is technical enough so competition can be held for it. Sure, there is commercial aspect of it but I understand that bass’s wide range of habitat allows the sport for that specific fish to be popular.

Both are great for fishing and give you a lot of bang for your buck. Sure, if we're talking about casting lures the ugly sticks on average are bad. But, when using bait they're very good for it. They are also very durable. When speaking about bells, most people are unwilling to pay hundreds of dollars for sensory equipment (for detecting a bite) just so the equipment will fail in a couple years. The guy from the previous thread was correct about (when fishing with bait in open water) to space out your fishing poles so you can find and hook up with more fish. A bell is great for detecting bites when soaking baits and it doesn't cost hundreds of dollars just to buy a retarded sensor (that could fail) when a bell works just as well.

Just got a Lamiglas X-11, 8'6" MH spinning rod with the graphite handle. Rated for 10-20# line and 1/4-1oz lures. Will be pairing with a Stradic 2500.

This will be a multipurpose rod, used for fishing small streams/rivers (floats, drifting and bottom baits) for whatever bites, as well as a carp/channel cat rod. I will also use it for bass fishing, using the longer length for extra distance as I'm a shore fisherman and with the 1 oz rating it can handle any lure in my arsenal.

It's like how most people jig with cut bait or worms attached to their lure while ice fishing. You'll get far more bites if you add bait to your jig. It shows a guy battling a 7-8 foot lemon shark for an entire 20 minutes before the rod broke. How many other salmon rods can handle a massive lemon for that long? Half the fight was the spine of the pole being bent to severe levels and he still managed to pull the shark in close several times. I even bet that a more experienced angler (that also didn't show off by jerking the rod back several times) could have probably brought this fish in although even then it would have been close.

I fishes in OC but the one time I went down to SD to fish sd bay, I went to shelter island and got some spotted bay bass. I parked at where the pier is and walked a good distance toward the the bay entrance ( west) to avoid the crowd and keep moving and casting until I find the fishes. You basically have to use weedless jig head set up or you’ll snag onto sea grass
Surf fishing is also good but I never surf fish in SD before.

I’d also like to point out the reason for using a fly rod over the superior center pin setup. On my home river we have two fly fishing only sections. Those secluded sections limit the amount of people and keep the absolute brain dead mouth breathing fuck tards out of sight. In one area there is a bridge that acts as a divide between fly fishing section and use what ever you want section and it’s takes no time at all to see why being on the fly fishing side is a much more enjoyable time. Meaning that they certainly weren't fresh or not even in the river before spawning that's for sure. I have owned some of Shimanos upper end rods (Poison Adrena, Had the opportunity to fish a Poison Ultima.) and they were about as good as it gets for bass fishing. But I do not bass fish that much because we don't have them that much where I live.

I fish almost exclusively Light action, UL and Super UL rods. There is nothing like a JDM UL rod from a custom Shop. I own Yamaga Blanks, Tenryu, Graphiteleader and a few Major Craft rods.

And, most are two piece. Americans think that the only way to get a decent rod is to get a 1pc, but that age has long passed. 2 piece does not damper in anyway the performance of a rod today. With that, you can store them better (I have rod tubes for every one of my rods).

There is no comparison and the only way you can truly understand is if you buy one and try it yourself. Recently bought a high end Ajing rod that weighs under 2 ounces, with #0.2 PE line I can cast 1/64 oz Jig 30 meters with ease.

Good luck getting a blank that isnt hot shit. There are NO blank manufacturers in the States or outside of Japan that can make blanks available to the Japanese market. Olympic and Tenryu are two of the biggest blank manufacturers in Japan, they make blanks for other companies. They are the only ones that own the technology that can make these delicate but powerful rods.

Carbon fiber content. and the diameter of the blank and the tip. Pic related. There isn't a single manufacturer in the states or outside of japan that can make a UL rod tip below 2.0mm. This makes an immense difference in sensitivity.

Most American companies do not even make their rods here in the states, they are made in China. Not only this, but because the nature of the fishing industry in America, the idea is being cheap. They use more fiberglass which means more material. This means UL rods will be not only heavier, but this extra material will require a thicker tipped rod. Not only this, but the more fiberglass you have in a blank, the slower action you are going to have. I've owned everything from St. Croix to G loomis UL rods and every single one of them feels spaghetti compared to a 99% Carbon fiber rod from Japan.

I pretty much own only JDM reels. What do you want to use it for? If you are going to get a shallow spooled spinning reel you need PE line. The thinnest braid we have in the states is 8lb (1lb dia). There are special PE lines in Japan that are even thinner than 1lb test and are even stronger. For instance, I just bought some 0.3PE line that is rated at 5.5lb and it is about half the diameter of 1lb test.

me either. Its really easy to tell by their fins though in the rivers and streams here. Idk about your area but for the brown trout we have around here the native ones will have bigger blotchier black spots that are really obvious when you see it that will give you a good idea if its a true native. When I first started I would show my fish pictures to the local fly shop owner and he and I would discuss what would make it one or the other.

I mainly do it for sport. Its quite fun catching big fish on UL gear, but UL gear makes catching even small fish fun and you catch more fish because it is so finesse inclined. I fish for everything and I have have heavier setups. Thinking about building a swimbait rod right now, but it would mainly be for Pike because I do not have big bass where I live now.

Thoughts on the 6' 6" Shimano Zerus? The only rod I have is an old as dirt one with huge ass eyelets from when I was kid fishing with my dad a couple times. Since I haven't gone fishing since those times but want to actually get into it I looked a little bit for combos and see the Shimano Zerus rod with a 2500FC reel. Seems rather cheap but good from what I can tell.
Would it be a nice choice for a starting set?

You can get them serviced but you have to send them back to Japan. If you are good with taking apart your reels, you can get all the parts online. I regularly service my JDM reels by just using the schematics and buying parts on plat.co

I was mainly using Texas rigged plastic worms but also had luck with a roostertail.

Maybe try fishing smaller areas like ponds/rivers/creeks. I really like fishing out of rivers. You never know what you're going to catch and you are usually guaranteed to catch something if you find a good spot.

For best results with river fishing I recommend taking live worms to catch whatever will bite and maybe also some corn for carp or something.

Just don't mess with them. Be wary of your surroundings as snakes could be anywhere by the water. If you see one swimming around like that I recommend just keeping an eye on it and waiting for it to go away. That's what a ton of crappie fisherman do. Thats also basically the only way you can catch steelhead in the winter alongside using "live" eggs. Also when you're fishing from shore, a hefty slip bobber can allow you to jig across from a weed line, and definitely is productive. Just because floats and bobbers are associated with kids catching tiny bluegill doesn't mean you can't use it. Some days even fishing bobbers and bait holding snells is the way to go, depending on what you're targeting.

I service all of my cheaper reels, the expensive reels get sent in for servicing. the korean reel is a 2 speed and has a drag that is pressed to fit into the plates. you also need a service tool to pull the shields and pawl. how many 2 speed levers have you taken apart? what color of cals do you use on your drag washers? what machine do you use to press fit the drags so they are flat and have no variance? The reel repair master himself (a.t) said he wouldnt touch it because of those very things.
thats the reason why i send reels to be serviced every season.

I have one little lake where there is some distinct drop that the bass chill on during the summer and I can’t hit it with spinning gear unless I do something stupid like running 4lb mono with a heavy lure, but memecaster will get a 1/2oz T-rig there and land some good size bass.

I’m sure there are other positives to them, but a couple decades of spinning reels vs a couple years with memecasters means I’m still a little more comfy with spinning gear for most stuff <1/2oz.

I understand, steelhead jigs, crappie tubes, and crappie jigs are rarely baited. Also I've used vertical jigging lures from a bobber across a weed bed.

Buddy, I hate to tell you, but at least some of the fish you catch never recover. Even if you release every fish you catch, some are going to get hooked bad, some are going to get too exhausted fighting you, some are going to stay out of the water just a little too long, etc. Even if they swim away fine, it doesn't mean that they wont die later as a result of you catching them. It's just the way it goes
