Hey /out/, I'm going on a 5 day canoe trip soon and wanted your input on whether I was bringing too much/too little with me.

In my alice pack, I have

2 garbage bags
1 pair shorts
1 pair pants
2 shirts
3 pair socks
towel
sleeping bag
hammock
survival handbook
bowie knife
bugle (i'm a music guy)
compass
50ft paracord
poncho
bug spray
lighter
flashlight
flint and steel
multi tool
stakes and chordage
mess kit
first aid kit w/ sleeping bag
tarp
2 metal water bottles

the only thing i can think of is

A) you can never have enough trash bags (for keeping things dry/keeping wet thing quarantined/etc
B) what do you have for raingear? even an emergency poncho might be a good idea, they're pocket sized

A poncho is good as long as you're not expecting any type of rain. it can double as several pieces of gear. Two quesitons: where are you going and are you going with anyone who's very experienced?

We're all fairly experienced, weekends and such. I usually bring a duffel bag and a day pack so I didn't know how much was too much in terms of just a hiking pack.

yeah, that also brings up the question of materiel. I'm hopping that very little of your clothing is cotton, and I'm going to assume you'll be wearing a set of clothing in ( ie the list is your "spares").

Oh, and +1 on extra garbage bags. In fact, i would suggest investing a few dollars in a good dry bag for your essentials.

Are you mainly doing day hikes? If you are, than a simply jansport size pack would be just fine. If you're talking about some serious hiking, then an upgrade is in order.

As for cost on none cotton, you'll be surprised how cheaply you can get it. Just avoid the outdoor stores. I've found great priced all synthetic gear at wally world, target, and many second hand stores. Often times its worth a look. At the very least, your "day" clothes shoud be quick dry, while your camp clothes can be whatever you want them to be IMHO.

Sounds like you're ready to go then. The only things I would add personally would be a Mylar emergency blanket ( hypothermia can happen in temperatures as high a 60 degrees! and in h20 and things get dicer), a warm jacket/vest/beanie and some extra socks and underwear.

Oh, and maybe a camera of some sort. Otherwise, enjoy!

I know I sound a bit like a broken record in regards to staying dry: Too many years in search and rescue looking for poorly preparied day hikers in really bad shape can do that to a man.

Paracord for the hammock? I've been told that it doesn't work well because it stretches and locks up the knots. If you've used it before though, I guess

I have nylon webbing for the hammock, the paracord is for the tarp/misc use. First time I used the hammock I used paracord, and it was fucking sketchy only hanging from two pieces.
