bottom of the tent
To be honest: this was to warm. Every night I'd settle in my sleeping bags wearing long underwear to get nice and snug and every night I woke up sweating, despite the freezing temperatures. While Scotland gets cold, it still has a moderate climate, so you're more likely to be bothered by the combination of water and cold than by seriously low temperatures. Keeping your sleeping system and back-up clothes dry is essential and honestly more challenging than just keeping warm.
Hence the extra tarp and space blanket, which kept water from leaking into our tent in less than ideal circumstances. We managed to keep our nights comfy and dry that way, so it's definitely possible! Besides: you can use the bothies whenever you find them.
My buddy filmed our trip and put a vid on youtube. I'm afraid it's in Dutch, but it does give you some idea of the conditions you could face in the winter season.
