Does anyone here work full-time in Horticulture? I am thinking of a career change and might start a course later this year.

Gardening is shit pay unless you can make it self-employed but I can't take much more of living in front of a computer screen.

Any landscapers or botanical people here with some advice?

I'm currently a seasonal fruitpicker in Australia. I'm not full-time by choice for a variety of reasons. I'm hoping to get something small started for myself here in the next couple of years.

I studied agriculture but did not mesh with spoiled grainfarmers kids.

I've done other horticultural work in the past and more recently. I also have a technical trade largely unrelated to horticulture.

Happy to answer more specific questions.

Landscaper here. It isn't at all what you think it is like. Took like 3 months of work breaking my back before I ever touched anything green, and even then they where weeds. The industry is also notoriously bad, with some of the worst average pay in the country (Australia)

You want work in horticulture, nurseries, tree farms and conservation/land management. All of these are ridiculously competitive, because every 22 year old idiot who wasted 3 years studying Botany, Conservation or Environmental Sciences at Uni (100's of people every year) are all gunning for them - because god knows they aren't going into Landscaping.

Also worth noting all of these fields have little to no room for upward growth in the industry, bar starting your own business.

Pretty much what I would have said. Low pay but there are oportunities to make sacrifices when it comes to living expenses. There are oportunities to make decent money but you have to work really hard or be over-educated.

It's something people do because they enjoy the lifestyle, because they can't do anything else or like in my case they are doing on-the-job training (unofficially) and poaching ideas for when they strike out on their own.

The money is in owning. Even managerial roles are underpaid.
