0,5l plastic bottle for drinking while on the move. If I wont be near clean running water I’ll bring up to four 1l plastic bottles with water. A small kettle to cook coffee. Small aluminum pan to cook food/water. I’ll usually bring a thermo cup for coffee, hot cocoa etc but will replace it with a 1l thermos with a small cup.

thats it. flask for my spirits and water bottle I can boil in. fun fact, titanium is really bad at conducting heat. once you warm that thing up, it stays warm for hours

the chink ones? i guess you could try heating it up on the stove and if it starts looking a bit sweaty and drippy then there's a problem. though afaik theres no reason for even the chinks to use lead for anything since aluminium is so abundant and cheap

OP here. As far as I've found the original MITUSA M-1942 canteens all used lead solder in the manufacturing. They originally used a solder band and then switched to a crimping machine with a dab of lead solder to seal it gaps. I haven't found any evidence that authentic canteens ever deviated, so the question of a lead-free M-1942 canteen falls entirely to reproductions. So I'm curious if canteens like the thinner Chinese reproductions and the 1.2L pattern copies sold as survival canteens have lead in them. I can't find any evidence of anyone ever testing them, and this is Chinese solder we're talking about.

I may be totally wrong in my concern and they may use some different manufacturing technique for the reproduction canteens, but I'm going off of what evidence I can find relating to the manufacture of the two-piece horizontal seam US military canteens.

Oh, it's steel, but the issue is that the canteen is made from two parts. It's a top and bottom half that are crunched and sealed together with solder, top over bottom. The question I have is what sort of solder was used, as it's a Chinese product and even the official US canteens from the period used tin/lead solder.

I have the 1000ml version, i didnt wash it the first time i used it so i probably have 16 different types of cancer now.Other than that ive been using it daily for about a year now, the throat is nice if you have to pee and you're in your car in a crowded place.Also it has a clearcoat on the outside to make it look and feel slicker, but it will burn off if you boil water in it. Overall great bottle would buy again if i break it.

Yes. I've got 5. 1000ml, 2 x 750ml and 2 x little 350ml? ones.

I've dropped them countless times, and dented them, but they're still Ok. There are a few sellers on aliexpress and there are definitely some that are better than others. One of the 750ml is thinner walled than the others.

I keep mixed coffee/sugar/whitener in the little ones.

They're good value. The neoprene covers soon get holes in them though, so I use an old sock to cover mine lol

Define "a pannikin". A cup? You can get a stainless steel cup with a stamped handle and a lid for $2 from China off of Ebay. Fly handle? You can get a fly-handle stainless steel cup for $5 from Walmart. Ceramic? No idea. Wood? Buy a carving knife and make one or pay the premium.

I don't know about things other than electronics, but if it's made past 2003 and is sold in the EU the solder they use in it has to be lead-free. Something about reducing lead in the landfills.

A hobo stove doesn't require you to carry fuel, just grab anything that burns like pine cones, wood chips, etc. So I make my own.

Either that or buying a water filter but water streams are surprinsingly rare around here.

Anyway, about your question: get multiple bottles. You don't want to find yourself out there with no water if your big ass bottle breaks or starts leaking. It's probably better for your back too to have 2 bottles on each side of your backpack.
