What instrument(s) do you bring on your /out/ings? Pic related is my choice, usually camp near rivers and lakes and love seeing how fast I can make the occasional rafter paddle.

ive brought an old guitar string before, you can tie it to a good stick and just use it as a fretless one string. i wouldnt take a banjo out i'd be too worried about the skin being damaged, also its too bulky for any walking.

Well, during spring atleast, you can make simple flutes out of willow bark. Don't know the spesifics, but it doesn't sound half bad

Thanks anon, It's an oberflacht lyre, i think they are related. But a kantele is a psaltery and not a lyre. I have drawings for kantele, would love to make one some day though

My girl. Baritone uke turned to DGBE. Been through a lot, neck almost snapped off one time and I had to superglue/fiber tape it back on. I like to tremelo pick it super aggressively to scare away ultralighters.

Well what type of lyre? On etsy they have several types of lyres (mostly medieval). There is a guy named Kveld that makes and sells lyres. If you want to make one yourself you could look at Michael J king's shop for some inspiration. The lyre i posted earlier in this thread is based of his oberflacht lyre (it costed me less than 40 dollars). It was really easy to make, even for me without any previous woodworking experience and minimal amount of tools.

I'm eyeing this one now, I hadnt seen it before on Amazon, only the ones with next to no reviews. It seems like a decent one to start with and in my price range

It might be a good place to start with (the harp you are looking at). But often these mass produced harps are not all that good and will need some help to make it sound optimal (changing strings, making sure that the strings are equally spaced, there are no loose joints etc).
Not nescessarily for harps, but especially for lutes these things apply, because being often not handmade, they tend to not be optimal from the moment you get them.
If you would like to play more tunes than on an six tring lyre like i have, a lap harp could (10/15 strings) be a better choice for you.
All in all, you should probably invest in a cheap one like this, and see if you want a better quality later once you can feel and see the eventual lacks of that harp and opt for a handmade one or similar.
Good on you for wanting to learn the harp though!

I picked up this shitty nylon guitar at Guitar Center two years ago. It's good for finger picking, and playing the Piedmont Blues is super comfy innawoods. My real guitar is a Martin, and there is no way I would ever bring it into the elements. There are a few State Forests with Primitive sites that aren't a very long hike from the trail head by me, so I can bring a guitar out there without it being a pain in the dick.

I like to bring it while solo camping or out with my girlfriend. It's nice to sip a bit of whiskey and just diddle away at some random blues riff or a Neil Young song by the fire.

Also I know my sleeping bag is super clean; I just got it with my tax return. I'm super stoked to try it out next week.

I bring my trumpet. I play reveille in the morning and taps at night so that everything knows when to wake and go to sleep. It’s a pain to carry around but I bought a lightweight case that I can attatch to the outside of my bag with a simple carabiner. Sometimes people are upset because it “disturbs the peace” but some people just can’t appreciate the acoustic of the woods and the way the brass sound bounces around the trees like a mellifluous pinball machine.

I've got a few guitars (classical, acoustic and electric), a banjo that I haven't played in 5ever, a harmonica that I've NEVER played, a digital piano and a keyboard. Plus some synths on the laptop. Thinking about grabbing a bass soon, and I'm trying to get into /synthdiy/ to make a modular system. Some day, when I have my own house with a soundproofed room, I'd like to learn the drums. Maybe I'll pick up a Uke or something for a traveling companion, I want something similar enough to guitar or keyboard so I don't have to learn as many new mechanics..

Eeeeh, I would recommend not if you want to play an regular keyboard instrument in the future, they tend to have such a small range you can only really play the melody without chord accompanyment. They're fun, easy, and lightweight, but I wouldn't pick them as a main instrument. You might aswell buy and old 2nd hand yamaha keyboard from the 80's/90's online somewhere, Those things were produced so much that they're worth next to nothing, you can get those for less than 20 bucks and are good enough to learn keys basics on. You can still get a melodica as a side instrument for taking with you while going /out/

I currently play bass guitar but I want to pick up a more /out/ instrument I could take camping or whatever.

Looked at a mandolin and banjo at guitar center. The double strings on the mandolin were kinda uncomfy to strum, but the size and everything else is great and if I could get gud I would enjoy it. The banjo felt more natural and I loved the sound and feel, but it’s so much bigger (and more expensive). I’ll probably wind up owning both one day when I have the money, so question is moot I guess, but should I go ahead and start learning the mandolin since it’s basically half the price and can go /out/ easier? But my heart feels more drawn to the banjo... plus it makes me think of that scene from Deliverance and how I could be a cool innawoods hillbilly if all else fails.

Banjo isn't half bad. Easy to learn, fun to play, and cheap enough that if it does get wrecked then you aren't cut up about it. My mate's trying to learn the new Rammstein song on his banjo and it's pretty good.
