Related: I find a surprising number of uses for the trucker's hitch both in the woods and in day-to-day life. I work in a theater and have to move a lot of heavy equipment/curtains, it's come in handy so many times.

you gotta know at least 10 knots, depending on which way the pressure is and in which ways you want your shit to rotate.
Opposite directions/ Low tension = Double Fishermans
Opposite/High Tension = Sailor's Knot
When the object is central and needs to rotate= Clover Knot
When object is hanging = Anchor Knot
Object hanging & rotating = Anchor Hitch
list goes on and on...
ESPECIALLY for the E.O.D. guys, they know almost every knot there is...

I had a really hard time getting them to work right at first, but I found that if you get someone who knows hot to make them to walk you through it once or twice it starts to make perfect sense.

That is like 6 times more knots than any normal person needs to know:

Bowline
Tautline/Two half hitches (same thing really)
Slipknot
Timber Hitch
Square Knot
Sheet bend
Fisherman's knot

That's all you need to know unless you're into sailing or net making or something that requires lots of specialized ones.

God damnit, I learned all these knots in boy scouts and I can do them flawlessly but the names just escape me for no reason.

There's an easier way to learn this one I've found. That's the rabbit-tree method.

What I say is make a slipknot, put the extra line through the slipknot and then pull the slipknot tighter until it reverses and BAM you have a bowline. It's basically the same way that people make a one-handed bowline but actually useful unlike a 1-handed bowline.

You actually don't need much more than this for sailing (aside from a cleat hitch, a figure eight or other good stopper knot, and maybe a few others).

Of course, if you're sailing a tallship or something, it's probably different but that's like far less than 1%

Prussik. I never learned a lot of those knots but some dipshit at the camp I worked at would never shut the fuck up about all the climbing knots he knew.

Also, yeah, water knot looks about right. All I remember is that it should come out looking like a lospided pentagon and that seems to fit the bill.

I'm guessing that is what he means. Water knot is good for webbing/slings. Unless he's talking about equalizing a multi-point (then a big figure-8 will do).
