Main decision you need to make first is what species you want to target. For trout a 9’ 5 or 6 weight rod is a good starting point but if you want to throw big flies at bass and big carp you’ll want a 7 or 8 weight and different style of line. That said you can fish for bass and carp with a trout rod if you limit your fly sizes but taking a heavy rod into a lot of trout waters will be counterproductive.
