I'm in the market for an axe, looking @ pic related
What length should I get? For an all around /out/ axe
Also, on Amazon I see some negative recent reviews. Has this company gone down the drain with quality control? Need something that will last a long time, don't care how much I spend

Dude just go to home depot and get the 15 dollar hatchet they sell. It does the exact same job as the sfa and you'll save yourself ~120 bucks

Just get a Tru-temper or similar head off of eBay or where ever for $15-$20. Re-handle it (it's easy and there are videos) with something decent. I prefer handles unfinished, so I can sand it and apply BLO.

Fix/reprofile whatever damage, if any, has been done to the edge and sharpen.

You now have a fine cutting tool for very little cash. Take care of it and it will probably outlast you.

Rinaldi are excellent, I have several Italian axes and I prefer the slide through handle
I like a 1 meter long handle on a smaller head, I don't see the point of the short hatchets unless it's for carpentry

I heard that Swedish axes are often harder than others because their trees are softer compared to most trees in America so durability is less of concern for them.

They are good but they have to have the right profile
Many old axes have been sharpened away and the edge is just a thick wedge that is good only for splitting, and the new ones seem to be made with that profile as well, it is no good for cutting
They have a very long edge that is good for limbing and carpentry work but I wouldn't consider them good for chopping, you really need a narrow edge to dig in hardwood and these don't do that very well. I don't know where this pattern originates from, I've seen these bearded axes used by mongols and indians as well so it may be turkish influence. Slovenian axes like pic related are of the continental european pattern like german ones
