Basically, teach a basement dweller stuff about backpacking. I know basic shit like "bring 2 of everything" and "don't be stupid". What I want to know is rough estimate of what and how much I need to bring, tips and tricks, etc..

My friends and I are planning a backpacking trip to WV. The range of people that are going is 3-5, and we're staying innawoods for 4-5 days, weather dependent.

Bring at least two methods of water purification. A metal pot and iodine/chlorine tablets/powder are both good choices. Depending on where you are, you might want something bigger than a .22, but that's personal preference and you're honestly unlikely to run into any aggressive predators in most areas.

Start with a day hike. Find the spots on your boots, pack, gear that irritates you and fix it. Do an easy overnight trip before you disappear for a week. You'll find all sorts of little stuff that "would be nice to have" on an overnight. Make a list, add it to your pack. When you're comfortable overnight, THEN try a few more days.

Ok, here's a couple basic tips:

WV fag reporting, just to clarify if you stay out of certain areas of the state (a place called boone county, and a few others) you wont encounter any inbreds. What part of WV are you going to? It's actually pretty nice here. The weather is a little toasty but nothing too bad. I'd absolutely bring the .22 for obvious reasons. Any people you encounter in the woods out here this time of the year are most likely gonna be trappers. Nice people in general though. You really don't have much to worry about the people but definately watch for snakes.

On topic OP, my suggestion is to honestly take it slow and observe the area around you. Too many people hike like they're late for a meeting. You'll have a lot more fun if you take it easy and spend as much time as possible just relaxing and observing nature rather than focusing on covering distance.

Dude, a friend of mine has a cabin in WV and it's beautiful. And yeah, coming from Pennsylvania I've encountered timber rattlers but I was blown away by just how goddamn many there were slithering around in West Virginia. We went to a watering hole for the day once also, and got swarmed by inbreds. They were nice but they were full on inbred, cleft pallets, four feet tall and were grabbing at us saying shit. I had always thought that shit was an urban legend and it was sort of creepy, cause you think about how even though the ones you met were nice what about the twelve generation inbreds living in shacks in the deep deep woods using their great granddad's civil war rifle. It's like you don't understand what "Grade A" means. It means "top marks for the intended application." "Not good when wet" is a pretty big demerit (a huge one, in fact) when considering outdoor equipment.

As a 10 year backpacker who started as a cheapskate with milsurp and blue tarps: I implore you, don't cheap out on your core items. Spend the extra cash to get a good modern backpack (I like Osprey but there are cheaper good options), get a great sleeping bag, and great boots. Everything else can be done on a tight budget.

And for everyone going "hurr durr my durrability," just find a company with a bulletproof repair/replacement policy and learn to do field repairs.

If you have rain flys for your tents (good god i hope you do) I would rely on them. Its also not a bad idea to bring a couple tarps and some rope and build a kitchen shelter that doubles as an eating/hanging out area. Just got off a fire (forest firefighter here btw) and was so glad we had a shelter to be in, because it rained like a motherfucker one day

And I wouldn't know about the specific inbred populations of certain counties, no, but if it's very rural I'd say they make up a decent portion of the population. It's strange though, everything I read and what everyone tells me is saying that inbreeding in Appalachia is greatly exaggerated and really doesn't happen, but I'm telling you, at least 2 dozen inbred people were at the same pond at the same time and as horrible as it is to say they were pretty scary. It was just then, either - we saw odd, misshaped people staring at us on some of the back-roads. I seriously wouldn't worry about it at all though, they are just people after all and even if they're weird people there's no reason that they'd be anymore inclined to violence if you don't give them a reason.

Oh, haha, if you hear the rattle stop immediately and figure out where its coming from and then walk in the other direction. You're most likely going to just see Timber Rattlers, which are pretty timid and have relatively mild venom (that could still kill you if you're way out in the bush). Just figure out where it is and back away slowly. Also watch out for copperheads, they don't rattle and they blend in much better with the leaf litter.

Just keep your eyes on the ground and you'll be fine. And if you happen to get bit by a venomous snake it's essential that you stay calm, an increase in heart rate will just circulate the venom faster.

Pic related, that's an American Copperhead. This one's just a youngin' but the bigger ones look the same. That little yellow tail is used as a lure to attract prey so don't go grabbing any mysterious yellow worms.

If it's right next to your foot I'm honestly not sure. My first instinct if I had something like a machete or stick would be to wave it around behind the snake and when the snake strikes the object then step back quickly. I've done this with big non-venomous snakes but I'm not positive it would apply to rattlers/copperheads.

I live in diamondack country where we have both western and a few eastern. The thing people tend to forget about rattlesnakes is the snake understands venom is a precious resource meant for otaining food. The snake does not want to waste it in you. If you hear the rattle, freeze and find the snake. If it's a few feet away, stand still and let it leave. If it's close, back slowly away. I've encountered several with no problems.

Are there water moccasins where youmre going? I don't think so, but if you see a fat black snake with a white mouth (he'll show it to you) watch it carefully. They're territorial bastards and will come after you sometimes.

Copperheads are hard to see, so pay attention. They aren't as aggressive as cottonmouths and usually won't come after you.

Maybe they just look really run down/weird due to a lifetime of absolute shit dirt poor living. Also, keep in mind many of them likely have parasites (worms etc.) from walking the woods barefoot and aforementioned ultra shitty living.
