if I am trying to be really optimistic about this, hopefully one or two of these guys walked away from this feeling a bit unsatisfied and are encouraged to actually become /out/ as a result. some people need to be eased into outdoorsmanship.
pessimistically, I did a project for one of these self described "collective"s last year. We were designing a mountain development for them. Bunch of yuppies who, on the surface were all gung-ho about wanting a place for people to connect with nature, have a sense of community, and be a nexus for people of all walks of life. but balked at/stripped away every element we tried to give them that would undermine their creature comforts and exclusivity. What they really wanted was a gated mountaintop clubhouse with for elites, but to still talk about it like some egalitarian place of humility and honesty. Yuppies are completely addicted to fooling
themselves. As long as they get a thin whisp of what they want other people to think they value they don't give two fucks about authenticity.
