They are worthwhile tools to carry, definitely, but the question you ask is notoriously affected by Goldilock's Syndrome. I prefer some tools/features that you may not.
My list of favourites:
in the backpack - Rucksack, Outrider, Picnicker
in the pocket - Farmer, Huntsman, Bushcrafter, Climber, Pioneer X, Electrician, Cadet, Sportsman, Bantam, Waiter
on the keychain - Vagabond, Manager, Minichamp

They are highly recommended but you will have to try a few to find the one that works for you efficiently.

In my experience, Swiss Army knives are much more suited to EDC than for any serious /out/ usage. The blades are small, thin and rather weak plus the other “tools” are so close to worthless as to be indistinguishable from it. That being said, if a SAK is your EDC, then you should certainly carry it in your pocket when you go /out/, you *may* find some use for it. A small sturdy sheath knife however is indispensable and if you actually need to cut wood of any appreciable size, a folding pruning saw will fill the bill infinitely better than the 2.5” nubbin found on a SAK.

If you want a knife that doesn't have a fixed blade, a locking mechanism to prevent it closing on you accidently, or decent steel, and you also want to make sure that you need both hands to open it, then a SAK is the knife for you.

There is no "right" way to do bushcraft. A sak is able to construct a shelter, carve wood, etc, which for some is all they need. It entirely depends on style of bushcraft or survival you do. Some do minimalism where they don't even carry a knife at all and knap one out of flint. Some carry a machete. Some carry a hatchet and a small knife. If one of the most legendary and revolutionary survival instructors in all of history used small knives like a SAK then yes, I'd wager it is the right way to do "it", and by "it" I mean his style of bushcraft or survival at that time.

It is entirely possible that all the way you do bushcraft and survival needs is a SAK or other similar slipjoint knife.

I might reconsider my position if I saw a SAK multitool that had tools I'd actually use; corkscrews and nail files don't put fish on the fire, and I don't want to be carrying tools on a hike that I don't have a use for, though I've always only carried a fixie and have never once wished I'd had any other type of tool.

Thanks for all the input. I think based on what you guys have said and thinking a lot into what I actually need in a tool, I'll be getting myself a
Hiker for EDC and bringing with me on minor /out/ings. The Phillips screwdriver on it will be handy, as I use quick retention screws on my slingshot. Will make my life easier changing bands in the field. Also the woodsaw for getting some noice kindling as >1485223 pointed out. The actual knife(ves) on the hiker will be more than adequate, on really need em for gutting small game.

Maybe I'm falling for the multi tool meme but oh well I'll soon find out if its money well spent.

Then will get a decent fixed or locking blade knife to bring with on bigger expeditions if I feel I need it.

I quite like the Rally, for my daily as a mailman. Simple tools to fix stuck cluster boxes, no FUCKING CORKSCREW to destroy my uniform pants, magnetic so I don't drop shit onto the street.
I want to keep it slim so I can still drop and grab the keys quickly. Weighing the snips on the rambler against the nail-file and $10+ price difference here.

Yeah. Because the risk of dropping my Gerber during a stealth port-o-john trip slightly outweighs my desire to go beyond for the customer. And a simple blade has only really been useful as a fireman, soldier, and forklift operator.
Also, I think there's some rule against carrying regular knives? I think they'll look the other way over a penknife.

Here in England we must have "good reason" to carry any knife with more than a 3" blade and/or a locking mechanism. While I'm sure most things I'd be doing while carrying could be considered good reason, its always better to not leave that up to the coppers discretion.

If we are taking small multi-tools I would personally opt for the Leatherman squirt. Having a pair of pliers on the go is incredibly useful.

Swarmy knifes are good to. Reliable for their size. There's a reason Swarmy is a household term for anything handy.

For the woods or EDC, I prefer my SAK because it's lighter.

Dunno the model of the SAK, my dad got it in the 80s and passed it on to me when I was a kid. I very much like the magnifying glass though, it's handy when the sun is strong.
The Leatherman is the Charge TTI, pricey but it takes a beating.

I also have a tiny little Gerber Dime that's handy but it's not very robust. Not for outdoor use.
I used to have a Leatherman Micra that I lost. It was pretty trash, not for outdoor use either.

Then some law changes happened and I could get a Wave. Then I kinda realized that for everyday use. A full sized tool is more useful so I went to the Gerber bladeless to be hassle free. For /out/ it's still juice or SAK.

Soak in vinegar until most of the rust rubs off with your hand, and then use steel wool. Get some mineral oil or better yet light weight gun/machine oil and use that in the pivots with a bit mineral oil on the blade.

Depends on the knife. german SAK style knifes from the ww2 era had mostly chrome plated frames with stainless steel plates. With them, passivating the rust by soaking it in hot wax is the best thing to do.
With knives that are black steel, soak them in oil until the hinge can be moved, then run a sheet of paper through the gaps between blade and frame (or blade and blade) until it comes back clean. After that, grind or polish the rust off down to the black rust (or down to the bare metal if that's the look you're going for). Then use gun blue if you want and rub hot wax over it. Lastly, polish off excess wax with a soft cloth.

Also, don't follow what >>1488999 said if you have a real SAK. The gun oil is going to damage the brass fittings (gun oil is supposed to remove brass traces left from cartridges, making it unsuitable for anything whith brass in it).
As for >>1489000 ,only start moving the tools once you've cleared out the dust with paper as I described above. Otherwise, you'll effectively use the dust to grind into tools and frame.

I carry around pic related (Victorinox Nomad) all the time. If I think about it, I have bought it more than 12 years ago and it's still in good shape.

I like it because it has the basic tools without too much fancy stuff you never use anyway. The grasp is much better than the traditional knifes like OPs pic.

Obviously it won't cut your way throug the jungle but it fits my needs perfectly.

U have to get in mnd is not a perfect tool, its a multi purpose tool, so it will be usefull but not specialized

I have used it on plastic pipes and those electrician's thingies where you screw in wires together. It did a pretty good job. I have Soldier 08 model though.

I have both Leatherman (charge) and several small victorinox.
Ad a tool the leatherman is great, bu Imo the victorinox steel is better for outside activities, it holds pretty well and is really stainless.
I guess the choice depends of you need the pliers or not, they are heavy but quite useful sometimes.
He other big difference is the scissors, which I end using quite a lot, the victorinox ones are GREAT.

If you're interested in the victorinox look for the outrider (pic related) is a little bigger than their faggy swiss army one, has a good lock and scissors

Found a skeletool on the trail yesterday. Does this only have a knife, pliers, and screwdriver, and not any of the other useless stuff? Has some minor surface rust, but the bigger “problem” is that it’s stiff from being out in the snow and mud all winter and spring. Lube with oil or grease?

The hook is helpful for strengthening knots or stitching, and super helpful for harrying heavy items wrapped in string, cable or twine. Also good for pulling cord or twine through a hole or tarp loop or similar.

As for the awl there's not much you can do. Get some pliers and gently bend it back. If it's not a major problem (i.e. if it closes and opens) best to just leave it alone.

Just did some more researching into the hook and it seems that you are right. Looks like it may be decent as a tent peg puller too. Something else may be more useful to fill that spot but it's good enough I guess. The corkscrew has been useful to help untie stubborn knots.

I think they are overrated.
From the one I used for a week everyday before I gave it away after getting back. I would rate the quality as just barely ok/better than nothing. The saw is too short and the wrong type for out. The blade isn't very good, it dulls fast. I don't mean magical super meme steel but my (free to me) inexpensive frost cutlery folder has a much better blade. The serrated blade is basically useless as is the bottle&can openers. The awl seems fine though, that worked ok.
I use inexpensive folder mentioned above and small folding saw from the gardening section, its better equipment.

The can opener has worked fine for me but I wouldn't carry it just for that when there's cheaper and smaller options. My awl is bent which is pissing me off. Overall, it's a mid tier all purpose tool that does a lot of things but none of them great.

Victorinox Swisstool. Hard to get nowdays, might not be in production. Not cheap. Chunky, "heavy duty" by EDC standards. The wood saw is sort of pointless but the other blades are well made, especially the simple prybar. Omits the stupid trademark corkscrew. I've worn out three of them over the decades, have a new one stored away for when my current one goes. It's probably the strongest Leatherman-type tool you can get, not pretty but gets the job done. I actually do carry it every day, along with my phone and keys.
