I don't know. Carry a pistol or shotgun if you legally can. Statistically your chances of surviving a bear attack go way up if you shoot it with a gun when it comes at you. Your confidence also goes up with a gun. Guns shoot further than bear mace and do more damage. To use bear mace the bear has already got to be closer than you want, and if it's up wind you'll spray yourself. Bear mace probably doesn't work on a bear that has cubs and sees you as a threat to the cubs, it'll hurt it but some pain alone wont stop a bear trying to protect it's cubs.
