Jeans. I know they suck, but they don't suck bad enough for me to stop using them.
Kinda want to try out linen pants but I've yet to find any that are reasonably priced and not hippie looking nonsense.

Royal Robbins Alpine Road pants. Very comfortable, very durable, drawstrings to roll them up when it's hot or muddy. I've been beating the crap out of mine for a year and a half now and they still look decent enough to wear casually.

When it's way too hot out I'll wear Prana Zion shorts. I've done linen pants in the past, but the lack of stretch gets really annoying.

Thoughts on the Sarma outdoor trousers from Varustelka? They look like a descent pair but kind of concerned about how they would handle rain as I live in the PNW.

Also lusting over the fjallraven hunting pants as they got got that fantastic wax treated material, but fuck those things are expensive

Here's what I've tried and my thoughts:

Fjallraven Keb Gaiter: the gaiter function is dumb, I just like convertible pants.
Stretchy, comfortable, cut perfectly for my body, convertible ends well above the knee so the zipper doesn't chafe, and fairly quick drying.
Nice to just wax the seat and leg endings.
Pretty much my favorite pants so far, I got mine half price and even that was ridiculous.

Fjallraven Vidda Pro - Doesn't live up to the hype.
Kneepads are dumb outside, I don't use them.
Pockets are fairly shit, there's no stretch, and they are heavy for what they are.
I still wear them in spring/fall, but I wouldn't ever buy them again.

Prana Zion - I have like 5 pairs, 2 convertible, 1 regular, 2 pairs of the shorts.
Dry very quickly, lots of airflow, surprisingly durable for how thin they are. Virtually no pilling over 3 years of use.
Pockets are easy to open when sitting, a godsend when I'm on the canoe. Kinda small though.
Amazing stretch, can roll them up real high on the thigh for river walks.
These are mostly what I suggest to people. A bit pricey and you can probably find something very similar at any old store, but my Costco pants broke down in a year while these have held up for years of abuse with only 1 popped seam on one leg of the convertible pants.

Random Polycotton carpenter pants (I've had CAT and Helly Hansen brand) - Nice, but wasted features for the outdoors for how expensive they can be.
I wear them at work in the fall/spring with kneepads but never in the woods. Again, kneepads are dumb out in the woods.
Most have pretty loose leg endings, a lot of the pockets are generally fairly useless.
Heavy and little stretch.
Overall not bad, but depends on the specific brand.

Costco/Walmart/whatever convertible pants - Good for a budget.
Generally built like shit, if they are convertible the seam is always on or below my knee and causes chafing so I have to roll them up as shorts.
Good stretch, dry quick, pill easy and fall apart in a year.

Those aren't boot liners, they are called valenki in Russian but they exist in nearly every Arctic culture. They are boots made from oiled wool felt for walking in deep snow. Tread is useless as it just gets snow packed in it, thick wool keeps the warmth in, stays warm when dampened and dries in moving air (even cold), and the oil keeps moisture out and stops your feet from getting minging. They're still popular throughout the Arctic Circle because they're so cheap and easy to make and maintain.

Not to rain on your parade but those finnish army issued bootliners in my picture are just finnish army issue bootliners hung out to dry. Worn with Nokian rubber boots.

Been looking at Vidda Pros a fair bit, how did you find the waterproofing? I need something that can take a downpour as well as a beating and ability to rewax the material seems like a great way to extend the life

oh I didn't recognize it as a utilikilt when I looked at the pic the first time (posting from phone so small screen).
Wool is very nice and makes me sweat less than in the denim ones and they're also nice and warm, but just too easy to ruin.

I highly recommend a trip to your local Walmart to pick up some Wrangler Comfortlfex Outdoor pants. They are lightweight, dry quickly, and very comfortable. I really like the neoprene comfortable, no-gansta-pants waistband. Plus they are $22 in come in several colors

I wouldn't consider it waterproof by any means and wont handle any serious rain.
Waxed G-1000 is weather-resistant, so it'll shed some light rain for a while, spray from the water, snow, some wind.
Fresh, heavy coat of wax works pretty good if you test it under the sink or something but in the real world I'd say it works only slightly better than a fresh DWR and any rubbing/pressure will make water soak into the fabric pretty quickly. So if you're sitting on something wet, walking and your pants are rubbing together slightly, walking through heavy brush, or sitting in an absolute downpour it'll soak through quickly.
In addition, waxing will noticeably affect the breathability of the garment while DWR wont have a huge effect.
I haven't really compared drying times, but I'd assume a waxed garment will dry slightly slower. Regardless, they dry fairly quickly in the sun.

If you're looking for something to protect you against a downpour, I'd just pick up some lightweight rain pants that pack small and are fairly cheap. I have lightweight Patagonia ones I got for $100CAD that do me fine for the rare times I actually use them, or really cheap, thick army surplus Goretex pants for when I expect heavy brush and whatnot.

Gorka's are definitely NOT a meme, however quite often the price isn't worth it. Gorka's are good here because they are cheap, but if you're paying +$100 for a full suit then you're being ripped off. Honestly I would say that they are on par with Fjallraven Kebs in terms of quality and water resistance. Gorka's works in all environments, hot, cold, always wet and damp, but it is Russian military gear and designed with the "good enough" attitude. The jackets are pretty redundant, only the trousers and braces are worth getting. With sizing only height really matters, the elasticant in the waist is really good and will fit if you are thin or fat.
