Just plugging a local event. An old cat I holler at from time to time got to talking with me about fishing. He told me this Sat./Sun. is the Potomac River Snakehead Tourney. I looked up the details (available at PotomacSnakehead.com). It's open to anybody with a Maryland or Virginia fishing license. $60 online entry if registered by/on Friday or $70 at the event (hosted at Smallwood State Park). $10 off the cost for active military. $1500 to whoever catches the most by weight with a bow. $1000 to the most by weight with hook and line. Flying Dog will also be there sampling beer and a guest chef will be preparing a tasting of snakehead. The rest of the details and schedule are on the website.
For Maryland anglers he also told me people were catching Atlantic Croaker/"Hardhead" shore-fishing the pilings of the Benedict Bridge on Rt 231. I haven't fished there yet myself and couldn't say how much room there is to share but people often park on the side of the road on the west side of the bridge and walk down beside it to fish. Might be worth checking out if you enjoy eating croaker.
