Are any of you guys part of a wilderness search and rescue group? I'm looking into them right now and they seem like a great way to get /out/ and do something useful while I'm underemployed.

That attitude is changing, but it's a very slow change that's not going to happen soon; it's going to be several SAR generations before that happens.

Also depends on the org. Some orgs I work with are very receptive to utilizing resources outside of their org and see the value in it, others only see it as a liability.

I have a job I really like but it's only 30 hours a week for most of the year, and I have no expenses so I may as well leverage my time in a useful way.

Yea so each group varies, some take any volunteers whenever and some have a more limited roster. The better groups I've worked with put on lots of trainings for their members so they can progress to technical rock rescue eventually, if they want to. This is in front range CO though so lots of sar activity. At the minimum they'll want you to be trained in being a basic litter team member, which is typically what 95% of SAR is anyway. Lots of older folks/yuppies on the sar teams I've worked with and they're a pretty big notch below our own rescuers (federal agency) but they get the job done for litter-outs and searches. If you want to get into swift water that cert's gonna be with municipal heavy rescue usually. Anything helicopter related will probs have to be through a federal/state agency position unless you stick with your local SAR group for a while.

I don't have a particular need to do the advanced courses, just the standard state taught SAR class would suit me fine for a while. And I've already got my wilderness first response cert, do you think that would help much on getting in?
