Hi /out/, I am a retarded citycuck that wants to go outdoors more. I mostly want to go camping, hiking, fishing, and kayaking. I live in Oregon so I can get out pretty easily but I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on things I didn't need or forget to bring something and starve to death in the middle of nowhere. I have a bunch of questions I hope I can get answered.

Is having a portable gas stove a crutch and unnecessary weight? Should I just learn how to start a fire with wood with a firestarter? Should I bring a firebox and or charcoal?

Are there any tent brands to look for or avoid? Will I be safe if I get everything from Cabelas?

What kind of shoes should I get? Any trail runners? Should I try on a bunch of shoes first? How will I know if it will be comfortable after breakin?

Is it safe to swim in freshwater lakes or will I get leeches/worms/AIDS?

Do you have a recommendation for a water filter?

Will it be safe to leave my car and belongings in a parking area in a national forest or will tweakers/crackheads break in? Should I just stuff everything in a 60L bag and take a bus to go places?

-Yes, unless you are going to a park that prohibits fires. A twig stove is a nice compromise, if you're not sure how to cook on an open flame.
You should learn to reliably build a fire regardless. If something goes wrong, or you need a romantic atmosphere, fire is your best option.
-You will be safe. Go cheap until you know what you want in a product.
-Real boots. They last longer, they protect your feet, and they can be cinched into a manner of compression brace, if not mated with split wood entirely. If it looks like your grandad or your marine cousin's boot, give it a shot.
Comfort is dictated by insoles and fit. If you go treated leather, mink oil doesn't hurt too.
-Any standing water contains burrowing worms. Usually they just cause irritation, but I wouldn't do it without somewhere to rinse.
-No. Buy a tin cup and draw from rapidly flowing sources.
-Excercise the same caution you would in any public place. Why do white people think the surroundings changes this? The rural poor steal as much, if not more, than urban ones. Just don't invite attention.

Thanks. I've been reading a bit and apparently algae and parasites are a problem in freshwater lakes so I guess I'll only be kayaking and fishing in them.

Is it worth investing in a GPS or should I just learn how to use a map and compass?

This weekend, pick out a 5-6 mile trail near you, pack a couple of granola bars and a bottle of water, put on a pair of sneakers or whatever shoes you have and get /out/.
If you end up enjoying it, next weekend try a couple other (longer) trails, pack a sandwich and have a picnic, and then come back and tell us what you liked and did not like.

>gas stove/cooking
>starting a fire
>tents
>shoes or boots
>swimming
>water filter
all of these you can worry about once you've already started going /out/. You'll only find out what you want to do (camping, cooking, etc.) or not do if you're already going outside. There's too many cases of millenials wanting to go outdoors because it's trendy right now, buying a bunch of gear, and using it once only to learn they don't like it. Save your money and spend that on gas money to get outdoors in the first place.

Just make sure somebody knows where to look for you and that you're carrying the basics:

a knife
fire making stuff
proper clothing
shelter
a container for cooking and water
a way to purify water
snacks
a way to carry all that in addition to the stuff you'll need for whatever activity you're going to be doing.

and you should be fine... and maybe a phone, just in case. Check David Canterbury's 10 C's for more info on stuff you should have with you.

Yes. if you need a portable stove, get an ethanol (cheap, but doesn't work in extremely cold temperatures) or gasoline (always works, but a bit more expensive) stove. Those take up less volume due to the fluid fuel and you can alway see how much fuel you've got left.

Yes, unless you're planning to go mountaneering or hiking somewhere where you can't find wood.

You don't need a firebox (or any other hobo stove) unless you're going to burn wet wood.
besides, fireboxes are overpriced larp gear. buying sheet metal and shears to make something similiar is way cheaper.

Depends a lot on what you want. imo, beginers should start with a medium sized tarp. Once you know how much gear you'll bring with you and if you'll often go out with others, you'll know what kind of tent you want.

Depends on terrain and how heavy your pack is. For the beginning, soft soled hiking boots are best. Later, you might want to try thin soled sport boots (for hard terrain and light pack) or hiking boots with hard soles (for heavy packs).

With boots, as long as they're large enough and don't have toe caps in them, comfort depends mostly on how you tie them.

Sawyer mini. They last longer than all competitors and are much cheaper. Their only downside is that cleaning them is a pain.

Just get a jetboil or whatever the cool-kid equivalent is. Mine serves all my need and ways nothing.

Buy a pack of 4 bic lighters. Firestarters are more like an artsy-crafty thing.

Not really. You're in Oregon and it's spring. Buy whatever tent is on the dirt-cheap sale at your local big 5. You'll buy a better tent later, after you decide what you wanna do.

Totally irrelevant. Personally? I go backpacking and bring only flip-flops for when I'm going over gravel or rocky patches. Otherwise they're on my shoulder-strap and I'm barefoot. I did buy a pair of slip-ons for being in rivers, to prevent toe-stubbage.

You really don't need special equipment to use your feet.

Check with the local ranger's station in the area you're going to, and do what they say. They're out there every day for years. Repeat their behavior and you won't die either.

What the hell is this blue tube thing called? It's like 30 bucks. But again: ranger station. It doesn't filter everything and they'll tell you if it's cool.

Dude you're in the sierra nevadas. You're not gonna get lost. There are these things called "mountains." Remember what they looked like where you parked? K, so walk in the direction that will repeat that angle. Or just walk up a hill, then walk towards the nearest highway that you just saw.

Anything military but other than that youte fine as long as you arent going anywhere extreme, you get what you pay for

Trail runners are OP, Altra Lone Peaks are my go to but there are others that are just as good, look for a wide toe box

There are usually signs posted if water is safe to swim in, if your worried just dont drink any of it

Sawyer squeeze is the unanimous choice it seems. If you carry your water in smart water containers you can actually screw the filter right on it which is nice

Depends on the forest honestly, if you're in Arizona I'd be careful but over in new Hampshire I've never had a problem
