I think there stuff sucks
Got a 600 multitool and it feels like a toy compared to Leatherman Wave
their knives are cheap but decent

I heard only good thing out of the company was their LMF-2 knife

I've seen some endurance test videos of this thing on youtube. (just goto yourtube and search "Gerber LMF endurance test knife review" or something). it holds up like a champ. these things are tough as hell. they chop wood. puncture and cut through metal, plexiglass, wallboard, etc. etc. the blade is 1/4" thick!
as an overall survival, SHTF utility knife the LMF is a beast. i swear i will own one of these someday. i absolutely think they are worth the money. as soon as i can earmark this kind of money on a knife it will be my next knife purchase

yes there are certainly other quality knives for the same money. i've never owned an LMF, a Mora or an SOG but i've seen plenty of good reviews. I've heard the Mora is sort of a single -use non-multi purpose and in a way is somewhat over-rated.
for me I think the LMF just fits the utilitarian kind of multi-purpose knife i am currently looking for.
i dont really need a "fighting knife" or or some cowadooty, special forces assassin tool. i need a tough, durable multi-use knife that would be good inna woods adventures or inna backyard home projects. the LMF is the best option I've seen for that. most other things i've seen that are similar style or purpose are kind of cheap and hokey

Have a gator jr machete, which is a cheap piece of shit with a tiny tang that I'd never trust to hold up if I actually needed it.

I also have a suspension multitool, which is snapped in two where the pliers pivot. A very cheap piece of shit.

Therefore I have no love for gerber.

I'm in the market to get a good all around knife. Two, in fact. One big, sheathed knife, and another folding knife.

There are no blade length restrictions or anything like that where I live.

Budget would be about $150 for both of them combined.

they have some good knives and they have some bad ones.
i would never get their multitools (the Dime being an exception, because it's better than the leatherman squirt) nor any of their machetes, because they have a tendency being a under-par quality compared to competitiors.
i own the Gator folder, the field dress kit, one the newer produced BG knife (that one lacks a bit of quality compared to other gerber knives though) and the metolius caper and have ealier owned a prodigy.
it's great knives and the quality is not lacking at all.
i really think people just have gone vendetta on gerber after their first revision of the BG series was a flop, or because they solely have bought their full-size multitools.

their knives and the Dime are great, but i wouldn't buy their machetes, axes and multitools in general.

Avoid Gerber and Cold Steel. I've got some older Gerber stuff and some newer Gerber stuff. Newer stuff isn't up to the older stuff.

For the fixed blade, get an Ahti leuku from Ragnar's Ragweed Forge. Ahti knows how to make a knife right. I love mine.

For the folder, get a Victorinox Trekker or similar model if you want a Swiss Army Knife of some sort. If you don't, go with Case, Buck, Moore Maker, SOG, Victorinox (they make some that aren't all multitool SAK versions), Wenger, Opinel, or Spyderco.

I've wanted an LMF II for a long time...until just not when I went back to their site and saw this cutaway image of the knife (pic related). I feel like a survival knife should have a full tang; seems like the handle will break eventually.

from what i've seen all their knives aren't bad, they are just really subpar compared to: buck, spyderco, kershaw, etc. The LMF-II would be the only blade i would ever buy from them though. from what i hear only get their american blades, supposedly the chinese ones are actually bad.

Kershaw makes alot of assisted knives.
Buck has an amazing warranty
Spyderco's warranty isn't very good, but their knives have really good quality control and since they are almost all hollow ground and full flat ground they cut super well, they are also better sharpened out of the box than anything i've ever seen. (my spyderco are all from the Seki City plant, so you're experience may be a little different.)

if you're looking for a knife with multiple blades/ no clip (an actual pocket knife) i would go with wenger, victorinox, etc.

people are going to hate me posting this, but checking out nutnfancy would be your best bet, his videos are extremely detailed, too much so for most people, but he knows knives.

citation needed

smacking the butt of that knife on something hard would likely break the plastic of the handle that separates the end piece from the tang. It's a crappy way to do what was done with the pilot survival knife in a solid way.

its been proven in countless abusive endurance tests. im not going to go search links for you. look it up on youtube if you really care to. i know ive seen a dozen videos of people putting these things through hell in bench tests and in the field and the knives survive way beyond any point the average user on /out/ is going to reach.

im not saying theyre the best. but from what ive seen they are pretty damn good.

The section of handle with no steel is a weakness that will be more prone to breaking due to torsion or vibration than steel would be. It's an unnecessary weakness in the design. I'd also add that serrations are simply an admission you don't know how to use or maintain a blade.

I'm not saying that you can't get one for your use or you can't get whatever knife with serrations you want or anything like that, I'm just saying this has design flaws that make me want to look elsewhere for a knife.
