In the future, don't assume any mushroom is safe. Buy the Audubon book of N. American mushrooms and learn how to use it. Not rocket science. Start doing spore prints. There's a section inside that'll tell you how.
Some mushrooms that look, smell, and taste edible are deadly poisonous. E.g. the death cap, amanita phalloides (pictured here). You won't get really sick until around days after ingesting it. By then it's destroyed most of your internal organs. Excruciating pain follows. Then an agonizing death.
Death caps are the no. 1 cause of death by mushroom poisoning in the US. They reportedly taste delicious.
