I acquired an old M1956 entrenching tool cover. No tool though. Will a modern US Army issue tri-fold e-tool fit inside one of these or do I need to find an older type?

Might not be wide enough. Those were made for fixed handle spades, not folding ones.

I believe you need an older type as there is a specific hole in the bottom, but depending how much play the M1956 entrenching tool has in the pouch, it could be possible to have the wider tri-fold etool fit also. Fun fact: The little flap with two holes in made for an M7 bayonet sheath.

I know right? Paid $2 for it at a garage sale. The picture is from eBay though. Mights rougher shape than that. Still good though. The bits on the front are for attaching a bayonet sheath.

If will fit anon but the problem is it's height, not width. You will need to really seat it in but they can snap close and remain secure. It's pretty comfy on my ALICE rig, especially when you attach a bayonet to it

Cool. Thanks for doing the research. Honestly, I don't plan on taking it out much. I'll probably just keep it in my truck in case I get stuck somewhere. Definitely looks cooler than the plastic ones though.

I have the shovel and matching pouch. I’ll dig them out and post a pic in the morning. The pouch has Alice clips that is supposed to attach to a web belt but it’s really awkward like that. The long handle flops around, and whacks ya in the leg etc. Works much better clipped high up on a pack. The shovel itself is a beast. Very strong and folds 90 degrees into a “pick” or mattock. Can really move some dirt.

I considered getting an original shovel but they cost a lot more than a tri-fold e-tool. One that, according to the reviews, is real US military spec is only $37 on Amazon. An M1951 tool seems to be more rare, with only one on eBay at the moment and it's going for $99.

Couldn’t locate the pouch atm but I’m sure it’s buried up here somewhere. If you’ll look closely on the shovel blade, you’ll see “US Ames 1969” stamped on it
